Joy banana help!

Hi all,

so im growing some bananas.
these are:
gros michel
manzano
namwah
orinoco
pisang awak lady finger
siam ruby.

last night my heater failed and turned off. the min temp was 7 degrees. what affect will this have?
especially on my less cold-hardy varieties. they have some visible cold damage on the leaves.
what should i do?
they are normally protected with a heater.

thanks

Are these in a greenhouse or inside the house? While the outside temp may have dropped to 7 deg, I don't believe the house temp would have. The greenhouse might have fropped to near 7 deg. ... Even if the plant lost a few leaves, with the heat back on new leaves should grow in a couple of weeks.

it's in a heated polytunnel. It's just annoying as fuel is so expensive and sometimes it just turned off. its 1 degrees tonight in the UK so if it goes off again im screwed

Check your heater Manuel, look to see if the heater has an oxy/co2 sensor. This may be the reason it turned off. You may need to use an electric heater like a milkhouse utility type. One works very well in my greenhouse keeping the temp at about 58 deg F.

You can't fix what damage is done. Best thing going forward is to keep them warm, so they can recover.

Do you have to keep them in a tunnel or can you bring them indoors for the winter.
Are you growing any cool weather veggies ?

Then disable the oxy/co2 sensor ... if that is causing the problem.

It's a safety thing for areas for human habitation. .... if the heater is using up all the oxygen in the poly tunnel, then the heater is likely way too big for the area. ... My greenhouse (8ft X 10 ft x 8 ft at the peak) is poly covered too and I heat it with a 1500 watt electric heater ( about 5000 BTU/hr). I wouldn't think you would need a heater much bigger than mine. .... What is the BTU output of your heater and what is the fuel? ... What is the square footage of your poly tunnel?

all i know is that i have a 47 kg propane tank and the heater is from a company called biogreen. the polytunnel is big so i think its important

Look on the side of the heater for the info tag and read the BTU output and CFM of the blower. Then post here and the size of the tunnel (sqft or length x width). .... Next call or email Biogreen about the heater cutting off.

Another thought, ... the polytunnel & heat is a designed system or the heating setup was recommend to you. Contact the company or person that design the system or made the heating recommendation about the heater problem. They should be able to tell you if the heater was working normally or malfunctioned. ... They likely have some liability for the problem.
