Re: Apple or iceceam?
congrats on the flower :08:
BUT at this time your guess will be just as good as anybodies. you will need a full cycle of pic; bananas as they emerge, complete pic of the plant, etc. all the way to when you eat one. the length of the banana itself before being eaten is necessary to identifying your plant. |
Re: Apple or iceceam?
I doubt it is Ice Cream. Trunk is too sleek and clean. If you bought it as an Ice Cream, there is a good possibility that it is really Misi Luki, AKA Namwah. It will be obvious soon when the fruit forms.

Re: Apple or iceceam?
Apple bananas where I live are quite tall in contrast to the small fruit they make. Here you would expect to see a 15 - 20 ft p-stem.

Re: Apple or iceceam?
Looks like Namwa to me but the leaves do seem a bit more upright than my Namwas. My understanding is that Blue Java (Ice Cream) tend to lean quite a bit and yours have pretty straight pstems plus Blue Java individual fingers sorta attach directly to the peduncle and Namwa attach through a platform/pad.
I'm saying Namwa but I don't know what an Apple plant looks like. |
Re: Apple or iceceam?
Akula, it was leaning a TINY bit, so I supported it...……...:08::0517::nanadrink::sumbrero:

Re: Apple or iceceam?
Do any of you have any idea how long it will be intill ice cream bananas take on the blueish hue?
|
Re: Apple or iceceam?
Well, if its a Namwa you will probably have at least a 150 bananas. Your plant looks pretty healthy and has a good number of leaves for fruit development. My understanding is that Namwa ripen much faster than Apple (Manzano or Brazilian).

The blue color is immediate when the fruit forms. Yo0u don't have to wait for it.

Re: Apple or iceceam?
In some post from 2007 or 2008, someone said that there are Hawaiian apple bananas, and then there was some other apple banana variety. The way to recognize the Hawaiian apple, is that all of the petals/male bananas stick to the tail. The other apple banana didn't have any petals/male bananas on the tail. Then the bare tail, like on a icececream. And are 'java bananas REALLY that blue?:0519:

As you refer to Hawaiian Apple is what it's call Musa Brazilian.....There is two Musa Brazilian Varieties.....Musa Dwarf Brazilian has persistent male flowers and bracts for a "dirty/messy" look rachis......Musa Tall Brazilian flowers and bracts falls off right away for a clean look rachis..... :2723::bananarow::2723: |
Re: Apple or iceceam?
In addition to the Brazilian as described by Hector above, sometimes people (probably not in Hawaii) refer to the Manzano banana as an Apple too which can create confusion. My understanding is that the Manzano does not have persisent male flowers.

Re: Apple or iceceam?
Hi!!!!! Me again. Is it just me, or do these Manzano/apple banana plants, from a post in 2006, called, "My fourth Apple bloom!" Look like mine? (Except for the height) Notice the black markings and upright leaves.........
