Re: any plants close related to the banana.?
Well, in Musaceae, there are 3 genera Ensete, Musa, and Musella. In the Order Zingiberales, which is the order Bananas fall into taxonomically, other families include, Strelitziaceae( the Bird of Paradise Family), Lowiaceae(has no common name), Heliconiaceae ( the Heliconia family), Zingiberaceae ( the ginger Family), Costaceae( The Costus family), Cannaceae (The Canna family), and Marantaceae( the Prayer plant Family). I got this info from Heliconia: an Identification Guide. The Ginger Order falls in the larger group of plants, the Monocots, which with the Dicots, make up the Angiosperms(aka seed plants). So now you have had some entry level botany. Was this what you were asking about?
I am a botany Undergraduate student, so this is something I know a ton about. Zac |

Re: any plants close related to the banana.?
Well I have a list of my bananas in this thread http://www.bananas.org/showthread.php?t=764 . I love all plants really. I can't be that selective, but I love Palms, Aroids, Bananas, you name it, I probably like it. There are some exceptions such as Bradford Pears and leyland Cypress.
Mike- That was almost quoted word for word from the Heliconia book. I just knew that it was concise, stated everything I knew about that group, and that was probably what Musa Cavandish wanted. Zac |

Re: any plants close related to the banana.?
:drum: Well they are endemic basically to my state. I don't have any right now, but I know you can get VFTs at the local Lowes's for pretty cheap. I know Gabe has a few growing at his house.

Re: any plants close related to the banana.?
I appreciate that - it's fascinating how all these plants are related. I'd put the book on my Amazon wish-list but it seems to be unavailable currently. Sigh... If you have other books on nanners, do recommend them please - I've found precious little so far out there.
Be well, Mike Quote:

Mike- I bought mine from the Smithsonian when I was there in the Summer of 03. I paid 27.95. Other banana books, hmm, paging Gabe.
On Amaryllis, I have Hippeastrum x johnstonii which is a hardy red one outdoors year round. Not sure where you could get VFTs....Maybe ebay? Zac |

I bought a Black Knight Canna, just because it was so similar in looks to ensete ventricosum Maurelii. It has awesome deep red flowers to boot!

Re: any plants close related to the banana.?
LOL CAROLINA..... random. Speaking of Cannas. We have the green w/ yellow flowers, red with yellow ploers, and green leaves with red flowers. And the Japanese Beetles attack the blooms on the Yellow flowers, but DONT touch the red ones.... ODD! Seven Dust does the trick...

Re: any plants close related to the banana.?

Re: any plants close related to the banana.?
Hey Zach without an H,
Great info on taxonomy!! So is Musa the only genus that fruits in Musaceae? Thanks. |
Re: any plants close related to the banana.?
Zach with the H, All Musaceae fruit, its just Ensete and Musella aren't what you'd call edible. Gabe would call them "Famine food", like some other flora we saw up in Nederland back in July.
nucci60- Yes there are striking similarities within all of group I was mentioning. They all look "banana-ish." Zac |
