I have tried getting Banksii from Don (Going Bananas in Homestead FL), but he no longer has them available. The Banksii that Bigdog has germinated may become a little more valuable.

I hope they only grow to about 8 to 10 feet (2.5 to 3 meters)! I hopefully will have some of my other AA's flowering!

Glad to see yours made it through the winter, Ken. The one you have has a yellow flower, unlike the one that Going Bananas has. It doesn't seem to be very cold-hardy! The one at my folks' house in Gainesville looked really rough in December, even before they had a frost. I'm not sure if it survived the winter or not. I'll have to ask Mom, lol. Yes I knew these were different in at least the flower, I had talked to Don and you had provided some information in previous posts. From talking with Don, and viewing pictures of the parent plants, yours seem to have larger fruit, I hope! Best wishes and Thank you for germinating these! |

I know this a relatively old topic, but looking at that first photo from Eric, as Frank noted it does not appear to be banksii (which has a green/yellow bud and looks very different). It actually looks almost exactly like the famous M. acuminata subsp. burmannica/burmannicoides 'Calcutta 4'.
Here is a photo of 'Calcutta 4' from a local research collection I work with. Sorry the photo is not better, I have not had time to take many good photos whenever I'm out there.

It is not flowering yet but per Frank's direction (Bigdog) of an update, the following photo document is submitted.
Hopefully it will shoot in the spring! This one is doing well, and I will move the other mat as it is not as happy as this one. Thanks again Frank!  |
