Default Transplanted basjoo

Good evening all. I am new to the forum and have a question. I have a potted basjoo that has been growing in leaps and bounds it is currently four feet. Today I felt it had out grown its 20 inch pot so I purchased a 28 in half whiskey barrel to let it grow in before planting in the ground (whole other story). While transplanting today I somewhat severed the last few roots. I know that they are tough but how tough. Should I be worried that I killed it? Currently the plant and pot are in a shady spot well watered. My plan was to leave it for a few days to see if leaves continue to sprout. Any suggestions or advice?

As far as survival is concerned, you have nothing to worry about. As long as you have a substantial
piece of corm complete with a rising (pseudo-) stem, you have a viable plant. That is usually all
you get, when you separate a pup from the mother plant.

Transplanting, though, can be a problem, if it changes the plant environment to much. Adaptation can
take as long as a whole month, before it shows any positive growth, or it can take place with nary a
hick-up, if you can do it without disturbing the roots too much.

Summary: Unless you plan to keep your basjoo in the larger pot for quite some time, you may serve
it better to keep it in the smaller pot, until it is time for it to go into the ground, but feed it well.

Good luck!
Olaf

Thanks for the input. It seems that the plant is doing ok. A leaf has completed its growth and another sprout has begun although much slower than normal. I moved the plant to a larger pot due to the rumor of root crowding. I did not know whether this would've been a factor in a 20 inch pot but wasn't willing to take the chance since it may be another few weeks before I can put it in the ground. Thanks again
