Good question, no answer for that. Let's just start having people post their findings. Now, one rule is that if you protected yours in any way, that is not the info we are seeking. Please do not post it here. We are looking for unprotected Basjoo only.
The results will be interesting for a future article in BQ if we keep it pure.

I had the coldest wettest winter here in SE TN since I have been growing basjoo and all I had was about 3" of mulch. I had a low of 6F a couple of times and a span of about 36-40 hours of below 32F. Needless to say I started out the winter with several basjoo pstems of over 8', and all of them are gone!!! Starting from corm up this year which stinks, but who knows, I may hit 20' by seasons end. BTW, I did the same with my saba this past winter and they went to the ground, but are coming up now, so I am impressed with it!!!

Stumpy, I do have growth from the corms and are about to start unfurling their first leaf... Slow and steady, until soil temps increase!!!

My basjoos endured 12*F with some mulch this winter. Not really a test for my bananas and tropicals, and I like it that way!

Can't say it got that cold here this year, but we did have a week or so where it was dipping into the 20 every night and plenty of nights in the 30's. I used just a few inches of mulch and only lost a couple leaves on my basjoos. Strange thing is they continued to grow between every cold snap and they are taller right now than they were in the fall. They are planted against my house, so they get shelter and and some radiant heat, but no formal protection. There are bananas all over my neighborhood and the taller ones that stick above the roof lines of houses got hit much harder than mine that stand only about 5 feet tall....so the protection from the house had to go a long way.
