Default Mulching close to stem?

Hi everybody

I am mulching my Musa Basjoo prior to fiddling about with chicken wire/ straw etc to form a defence against the winter cold.

Question: I have mulched over with well rotted manure and wood chip. Is it okay that the mulch makes contact with the stems, or could this cause problems ie rotting.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.
