Super SMALL bananas
 

I just got some super small nanners for a gift, this this bunch fits in your hand!! The fruits are about 3in long!! The bag that they were in said that they are sweat... so does anyone know know what type of banana plant makes these nanners? I have some size references in the pictures...

I ate one, it tasted sweat almost like a red apple. They have a yellowish center, not like a normal wightish-yellow.

They are Musa 'Nino', also commonly called 'Sucrier', there are many other names for them though too.

They should be Manzano or apple bananas.
Most of the time you find them in Latino or Asian markets.
The plants are susceptible to Panama disease.
the Manzano is one of my favorites.
I have several growing in my yard now.
My neighbor has several and regularly graces me with some of his.
As with any fruit the store bought ones are not as good as home grown.

I was about to say that they are Manzano. I have a mat of it now, and it always has these apple flavored bananas *hence the name 'apple banana'.
I think it's a very fast maturing one as well, which usually is ready to pick in about half the time of many others.

I agree. If they have an apple taste to them, they are manzano. As far as I know, they are the only variety of bananas with that characteristic.

However, I do not agree with manzano's being black when ripe. You DO want to see some black on the skin before you eat it, but not entirely black. If eaten when greenish/yellow with no black spots or cracks, the bananas will be VERY starchy and inedible. I usually wait to see the skin crack.

Blake09, did your little bananas show the above mentioned characteristic?

Here is a photo of some I bought at the store the other day. They are commonly sold in all grocery stores here. They will not be ripe for another 2-3 days.

Some WONDERFULLY DELICIOUS baby bananas I picked up yesterday @ .99 cents a pound.
Cost me .59 cents! :)
They were so yummy!!

It says 'baby' on the sticker... so I guess it's the below mentioned baby/nino bananas.

Akk! I've been down that road. IMHO Manzanos OR Niño's taste terrible when they get too black. :( I've had to give them to the dogs because they taste too much like an overripe mango. Not good. Black spots, definitely. Black and no yellow - garbage.

Found some baby bananas in the fruit section at my local Publix on 9th Ave for any locals reading. They were in the section with the plantains. First time I have seen them in our area. The brand is Chiquita and the label says Manzano from Columbia. The hands of about eight were completely green when I bought them a week ago. Just now turning yellow. I understand that they should be brown to eat but decided to test a yellow one with a few spots. Uckkk! Not that I have actually eaten one but it tasted like a dusty, raw potato. I guess I will have to wait another week.

I'm use to waiting about two-three days to consume an avocado but waiting ten - fourteen days between purchase and consumption of a manzano is ridiculous. How does Chiquita plan to sell much of these things? Consumers who eat this thing (probably a high percentage are Mothers purchasing for their toddlers) when its yellow are going to be very disappointed.

Awesome!.....If you want or next time, put them inside in a paper bag with an apple!......It will speed up the ripen process!.....

HMelendez, thank you for the reminder about the apple trick! I've always tried to keep the store bought cavendash as far away from the apples as possible! Haha. I've got about five manzano fingers left and just put them in a plastic bag with an apple. Thanks again!

I never cared a lot for manzano. 99% of sold manzano will be labeled as “Manzano” or “apple banana”

The smaller tiny fingered ones from Dole, Chiquita, etc are “baby bananas” and as Musa Expert Gabe said long ago are Musa Nino. From my experience growing the dwarf “Musa nino enano” or “Musa dwarf nino” they are such a strong grower! You can’t beat the fruit! Very very sweet! Just what I like! Blows away any manzano in my opinion!

Also, I prefer Musa Niño to a Manzano any day!.....Very sweet fruit!.....Sometimes, I find them at Publix Supermarket!....



My Dwarf Niño it is growing nicely!....She picked up the growing rate since I trans-planted her to the ground!....Currently, she is pushing out the new cigar leaf!.....I can't wait to taste my own grown Niño fruit!.....

They come up so early! In the spring I’m talking around the same time as the Orinoco and namwa! Very surprising since they are an AA which do NOT like cool weather! These are so close to fruiting in a single season for me. They bloom about 8-9’. The first year planted they flowered just as winter hit. This year is messed up. So next year will be the test! Which I am very excited for!
