Re: Super SMALL bananas
They are Musa 'Nino', also commonly called 'Sucrier', there are many other names for them though too.

Re: Super SMALL bananas
LOL...leave it to Gabe to come in here and tell you EXACTLY what you have in detail without hesitation. Props, once again bro!

Re: Super SMALL bananas
They should be Manzano or apple bananas.
Most of the time you find them in Latino or Asian markets. The plants are susceptible to Panama disease. the Manzano is one of my favorites. I have several growing in my yard now. My neighbor has several and regularly graces me with some of his. As with any fruit the store bought ones are not as good as home grown. Scott |

I was about to say that they are Manzano. I have a mat of it now, and it always has these apple flavored bananas *hence the name 'apple banana'. I think it's a very fast maturing one as well, which usually is ready to pick in about half the time of many others. Enjoy! |

Here is some info copied from: Six Most Popular Types of Bananas | HealthMad -Manzano Banana The Manzano banana is short and chubby with a mild strawberry-apple flavor, and the skin is black when it’s ripe. It has a chunkier and heavier appearance than traditional banana. This banana is usually grown in Asia, South America, Mexico, Caribbean, and Africa, which also known as Apple banana. Baby/Nino Banana Baby/Nino banana is about three inches long. When they are ripe, they turn bright yellow and have a rich, sweet flavor, and creamy texture. This is one of the smallest and sweetest bananas around. It is only 3 inches long, and a native of Colombia. It is an excellent source of heart-healthy vitamin B6. This baby banana can be baked, sauteed, broiled, and even grilled.- However, I do not agree with manzano's being black when ripe. You DO want to see some black on the skin before you eat it, but not entirely black. If eaten when greenish/yellow with no black spots or cracks, the bananas will be VERY starchy and inedible. I usually wait to see the skin crack. Blake09, did your little bananas show the above mentioned characteristic? Here is a photo of some I bought at the store the other day. They are commonly sold in all grocery stores here. They will not be ripe for another 2-3 days. ![]() |

Re: Super SMALL bananas
Found some baby bananas in the fruit section at my local Publix on 9th Ave for any locals reading. They were in the section with the plantains. First time I have seen them in our area. The brand is Chiquita and the label says Manzano from Columbia. The hands of about eight were completely green when I bought them a week ago. Just now turning yellow. I understand that they should be brown to eat but decided to test a yellow one with a few spots. Uckkk! Not that I have actually eaten one but it tasted like a dusty, raw potato. I guess I will have to wait another week.
I'm use to waiting about two-three days to consume an avocado but waiting ten - fourteen days between purchase and consumption of a manzano is ridiculous. How does Chiquita plan to sell much of these things? Consumers who eat this thing (probably a high percentage are Mothers purchasing for their toddlers) when its yellow are going to be very disappointed. |

Re: Super SMALL bananas
HMelendez, thank you for the reminder about the apple trick! I've always tried to keep the store bought cavendash as far away from the apples as possible! Haha. I've got about five manzano fingers left and just put them in a plastic bag with an apple. Thanks again!

Re: Super SMALL bananas
I never cared a lot for manzano. 99% of sold manzano will be labeled as “Manzano” or “apple banana”
The smaller tiny fingered ones from Dole, Chiquita, etc are “baby bananas” and as Musa Expert Gabe said long ago are Musa Nino. From my experience growing the dwarf “Musa nino enano” or “Musa dwarf nino” they are such a strong grower! You can’t beat the fruit! Very very sweet! Just what I like! Blows away any manzano in my opinion! |

Re: Super SMALL bananas
They come up so early! In the spring I’m talking around the same time as the Orinoco and namwa! Very surprising since they are an AA which do NOT like cool weather! These are so close to fruiting in a single season for me. They bloom about 8-9’. The first year planted they flowered just as winter hit. This year is messed up. So next year will be the test! Which I am very excited for!

Re: Super SMALL bananas
That doesn't look like a Niño and it doesn't even appear to be a dwarf.
It does look like a beautiful plant, congrats. :woohoonaner: http://www.bananas.org/f12/links-hel...a-18465-4.html Quote:

Re: Super SMALL bananas
Haha
More attacks by PR Giants imagine that! Musa Nino Enano. Source is USDA Tars In PR and if that is the case then your entire collection is incorrect! Plus this clone has been verified at flowering. There is absolutely no way to ID a plant that is this small. You should go ID the “real deal” FHIA-01 Goldfinger that you sold to Hector. It’s looking like an off-type to me. You should also check your Musa cocos clone, it grows to 11’+ Also often times plants in the tropics look different due to disseses and other problems. Your plants could look “different” due to this. You should have your commercial plantation checked ASAP! Especially how you send plants bare root and with soil. With TR4 found in Jamacia we must all be vigilant!! Hector thanks for your picture! When it fruits you will have confirmation that it is a Niño enano! |
Re: Super SMALL bananas
There is a very simple scoring system.
Most people should realize the dwarf nino is a dwarf Group AA Subgroup Sucrier If it's not a dwarf then it can't be a dwarf nino. If it's not an AA then it can't be a dwarf nino. If it's not a Sucrier then it can't be a dwarf nino. Only one of those statements need to be true for it not to be a dwarf nino. Then all anyone needs to do is look at the photos. If someone isn't familiar with the descriptors of a dwarf nino then access a passport online. This doesn't identify the cultivar but it does eliminate other Groups and Subgroups and obviously if you eliminate AA or Sucrier it can't be a dwarf nino. In most banana growing countries even children can identify some Groups and Subgroups just by looking at them even if the plants are young. Quote:

Re: Super SMALL bananas
Plant has been potted for over a year. Hector will keep the forum updated and we will see when it flowers.
I know what I grow and so does USDA Tars PR. My reputation speaks for itself and my customers know that and know my standards. I’m done. Don’t have time for your childish attacks and games. So keep replying as I’m sure you will. |
Re: Super SMALL bananas
Oh wow, they look so cute this is the very first time that I have seen a small banana three.

Everyone that saw your photo should have been able to realize that your banana was not a dwarf, and if it's not a dwarf it can't be a Dwarf Nino. If you had simply measured a leaf blade and divided the length by the width you would have realized that it was not a dwarf. Unfortunately it's very common for some seller's to ship the wrong bananas and that's why buyer's should take a few minutes to learn the basics about identifying a banana. http://www.bananas.org/f12/links-hel...a-18465-4.html Next, you should have looked at your banana for signs of balbisiana. The Dwarf Nino is an 'AA' diploid and has no signs of balbisiana. Again, everyone that saw your photo should have been able to realize that your banana has balbisiana in it so it can't be a Dwarf Nino or any other 'AA' diploid or 'AAA' triploid. Next, you should try to determine the amount of balbisiana it has. Again, everyone that saw your photo should have been able to realize that your banana has a heavy amount of balbisana and most likely is an 'ABB' type. There was never a chance that your banana was a Dwarf Nino because everything pointed to an 'ABB' It should never have taken you over a year to figure that out. The next step was to figure out which 'ABB' cultivar Tytaylor77 sent you. Quote:

Re: Super SMALL bananas
Keith, I have the Nino you speak of. I was confused when I received it. Looked orinoco like from day one. HMelendez wouldn't address anything in my post. Only PM. Gabe sent me a PM as well with photos I could use to identify. The plant is cold hardy like balbisiana, has very long petioles like balbisiana, and the petioles are closed like balbisiana but maybe a tad open when young. Here is my original post http://www.bananas.org/f12/need-iden...ino-48588.html. It was this plant and this topic that made me lose interest in this forum.
