new to bananas
Im very new to growing bananas. So far all I have are some dwarf musa acuminate that I grew from seed.
I wanna try crossing different species of bananas to hopefully end up with a seedless variety that can produce fruit in the PNW. Not sure how realistic that is or which varieties/species would be best, but that's why I'm here: to find that stuff out Im in seattle zone 8b |

Re: new to bananas
Welcome.. I believe once you get a soil mix down that doesn't hold water is the key cuz once it gets cool water is the enemy of corm. Cold Hardy like Caligold which is basically a Dwarf Burro or orinoco is probably best. If you have tall ceilings u can grow it inside during the winter. Plant back out in the spring or when you not going to have any more freezes.. Frost cloth protects the leaves.. but be aware they can be a hell of a plant to be toting.. I just planted a monster i had to relocate I bet it weighed in at close to 275 lbs. I shoulda cut the top off.. before I moved it but the thing you see in retro-vision.. lol I did save 4 ft of stalk. I had a friend bring in his back hoe to dig the hole..

The pnw has very cool summers so plants that need hot weather don't always do very well. I'm also a bit more interested in breeding bananas then growing them to eat, so unless it produces seeds I probably won't. Can those produce seeds? I know most eating ones can't, but i've also heard a few can produce seeds if provided pollen, just not that many and they’re difficult to germinate |
