Default New Banana,,,er I mean member

High everyone. Just wanted to say hello and introduce myself. I live in San Antonio and am starting to convert my backyard to a tropical theme. So I lucked into some free banana plants and started doing research on them.

But wow,,, what could be better than a banana plant? I'm really hooked on the darn things. Fast growing, very nice to look at, fairly indestructible, self propagating, they have fruit and flowers and are soo different than almost any other plant. At least here in Texas.

So you might ask, what types do I have? Well all I can say for now is 2 types. WHat kind they are beats me. I'll try to find out later this year as they grow. "Bananas pretty well die down to the ground in SA during the winter".

Oh well, Banana On!

Hey BananaMike,
Hey from Conroe, TX. You came to the right place!!

We had such a mild winter this year that the bananas wintered over w/o being cut back. As a result we have fruit coming on - so you never know what you might get in San Antonio!!

If you put some pictures in your gallery "the experts" here will be able to help you identify your mystery nanners.

Thanks everyone for the very warm welcome.

I'll bug you all later with my banana questions,,, as soon as I figure out how to use this forum better. I'll be dipped in banana compost, but it really is a bit of a struggle getting around. Maybe I need a beer.

I've got a giant plant that I cut back for winter and doesn't seem to be coming back. It fruited last year, so I think it may be spent. I'm thinking of doing a corm division........

Never done or heard of someone doing that. I wonder how many plants I can get out of it.

Cheers!

Magicgreen,,, thanks but the corm division is now off. Or at least for now. Got home tonight and I got a nice new pup coming up on the nearside of the plant. I'm geussing that their are more to come.

Think I'll sit back and wait and see how many pups "the giant" puts out before I do the corm division. Once the pups stop coming up, it's time to divide that corm. I've read that every corm has pups, or buds. So I'm hoping that even a spent plant, can be dug up and divided.

We'll see. I've got six main plants in the yard and would like to increase that number to twenty this year...

Hey, I saw your pictures.... Very nice, that potato vine is really neat. I want to get one!

Hi Mike,
I love potato vines. I over-wintered the tubers! Want to see if they'll put on a good show instead of buying them every year!

The past years corm will produce new pups. Keep the ones you want in that location and transplant the rest. Top dress with cow manure. "Black Cow" brand was reccomended to me last year and my bananas really took off. Bananas are heavy feeders.

If you have 6 main plants now, they may easily send out pups to give you your 20!!!
