Looking ahead to spring!!!
Hello everyone, not much of a talker but this site is awesome. Started growing two banana plants last spring that I bought from Henry Field's Seed & Nursery: A household name for all your vegetable & flower seeds since 1820. Thats all it took I am a banana man. I live in Ohio zone 6 by the great lakes, so I have to pot or dig them out at the end of the season. The plants were in pots and had pups so I dug them out and replanted when they had about 4 or 5 leaves or 14 inchs high. Well I potted them last summer and they did nothing till now. The top half died. So dug them up and the corm on them were alot bigger so I cut the top stem off and replanted. Now I see new growth coming up. It was only a couple of days, nothing all summer till now. Now I have seven plants. They are musa dwarf cavenish I think... Well anyways I have seeds from a musa zebrina and going to give it a try to grow. Thank you for all the info here....

Re: Looking ahead to spring!!!
Welcome sirmoebly. I got my first 2 bananas over 10 years ago and I think it was from Fields. They were just listed as " musa banana" that was it. I had them in 10 gallon pots for 4 years and decided they weren't going to amount to anything so I planted them in their "final resting place" out in the garden. Sad thing was when I did this their bases were ridiculously swollen, meaning they were probably going to flower eventually! Learn from my mistake and get all the info you can from this site and make sure to check out older threads that will prove very helpful.

Re: Looking ahead to spring!!!
If any of my Bajoos make it your welcome to some pups. Can probably do a super dwarf too. The nursery was telling me about the voodoo lily. I was thinking of getting one and planting over by the neighbor. Here is a thread of one of my basjoo's and how I have it protected.

Re: Looking ahead to spring!!!
sirmoebly, I like your new avatar, my oldest son is doing his graduate studies at Ohio State, He wants to be a Physics professor, the boy is 6'3" and 285, strong as a farm ox, and since his sophmore year in high school, no interest in sports, he wants to teach Physics, and Mathematics, So yes I'm increadably proud of him, Can't wait to call him Doctor! I personally am an Illini fan but since my son chose Ohio State I'm a Buckeye fan as long as they're not playing the Illini.

Re: Looking ahead to spring!!!
Sirmoebly, thanks for the tubers. I'm excited to see how they do this spring. Your planting/growing station is awesome. Think about some bottom heat for those seeds your germinating. Many use a reptile heater. Just a suggestion. You may need to wait till spring to plant that ginger. It really didn't look that impresive to me last year but was fun just seeing it grow. Anyway thanks again!
