Leaning Caryota
Hi - Just joined this forum today to learn more about the bananas and possibly get some advice on my leaning caryota gigas. I'm wondering if I should just leave it or try to straighten it up. It's been in the ground about 2 years and was straight when I planted it. I'm in encinitas, so california and any ideas would be appreciated ...

It should be easy enough to dig around the root ball and straighten without injury to the plant.

You can definately dig that up a little bit (make sure you dont injure the roots). Also if you want to make sure it doent happen again you can tie a rope to it and attach it to the fence. It shouldnt have the problem again once it has a nice root system.

Very nice plant! I would either just tie a rope to it and force it to right it self or dig it up. But digging it up is more work and more stress on the plant, though. Welcome to the site...hope you enjoy it here!

Thanks for the replies! I went ahead and dug down all around it until I could get it to go upright with a rope to the fence holding it in place. I did hit a couple roots but hopefully it will forgive me. I had just never seen a picture of one of these monsters righting itself and would hate to see it go down in a big wind once it get's huge. In regards to the leaning to the sun, there's nothing shading it but I thought that maybe it was trying to grow away from the house and other palms to give itself some room. Now for some banana's around it right? Thanks all!!
