Hello there banana peops. My name is John and I live here in Chico, CA. If you know California decently you'll know it's a crazy college town roughly in between Sacramento and Redding. Anyway, I currently only have 1 banana plant: the probably over hyped Super Dwarf Cavendish. I will be doing an indoor/outdoor (depending on the weather) container grow. We sometimes dabble a little bit in the 20's during winter, and once in a great while teens. In the summer we are commonly around the century mark. We even get as hot as 115 every few years. Currently my plant is still in the pot the grower sent it to me in (I'm waiting for some pineapple tops to have adequate roots and just do them all at once, so a few more days. The top my better half started has 2 inch roots [edit]EXCUSE ME, not 2, but 3+ inch roots! Everything I've seen said it takes 2-3 weeks for that kind of progress! [edit] and it's only been 6 days sitting on top of the fireplace getting indirect sunlight!), and I'm waiting to harden it off outside. It's still in the mid to high 90's so it may be a few weeks. I'm not exactly sure my grow zone as each place seems to tell me something different. I've gotten 8, 9b, and 8-9. I really am trying to invest more into growing my own fruits and vegetables and become less dependent on store bought. Not to mention it's expensive, especially organic, and I just prefer the quality of homegrown that I took the time and care to grow myself, and I know exactly what's going into my body. I enjoy gardening and growing plants indoor in general. I already have plans to order a couple more banana plants and some dwarf fruit trees soon. I plan to order a Dwarf Red and a Dwarf Orinoco. So it seems I'm starting to ramble here a bit, as per usual, but I just wanted to say hi and introduce myself. I think it's really cool that there is this forum here for people to talk about, get tips, help, trade, etc., etc. about bananas, and I look forward to talking with you folks and learning as much as possible from you as well and eventually returning the favor to others. If you actually made it this far (haha!) thanks for taking the time and caring enough to know a little bit about me and my super impulsive, random self.
John Q.

Hello, Welcome & Happy Growing.. If you have space inside for plants.. I'd grow a Veinte Cohol in the ground during the spring, summer & fall and in a pot during the winter..:^)

Thanks Migael, and also for the suggestion. I have space outside and inside for a container, but not really any space to plant much in the ground. I rent and half my backyard is concrete, and 2 fir trees and various other plants that were already here take up a big portion of the other half.

I don't even know exactly what those are. I tried googling, but it didn't show me much. I haven't even been to The Bay in almost a decade unfortunately. Grew up in the South Bay in San Jose... then I moved to this forsaken part of the state.

Salutations! That's very comforting to know since we have basically the same weather. How do your plants do over 100? Any tips or advice, or things to be mindful of growing bananas in our oftentimes sweltering environment Bob?
