Hi!

I'm new to this site and am growing my first banana plants, 2 dwarf cavendish. I have them in 12" pots filled with 2/3 topsoil and 1/3 compost.
They seem to be doing ok despite the 40 days of 100+ heat we've had. Normally we get 1 or 2 days of this kind of "warmth."

I know next to nothing about growing bananas. What else do mine need and when should I seperate the pups? There's a family up the street from me that would just go nuts over having banana plants of their own.

I'm looking forward to the future and growing many different kinds and colors of bananas.

I saw the map. Looks like Banana Mike is in Schertz, and I'm not far from there.

When can I expect to see bananas?

One good thing- the squirrles don't seem to bother the plants. Now to get them to leave everything else alone-

I think I'm going to have fun with my bananas. I went online and did a search and found blue, pink, and even black bananas! I can't wait to have a collection. Imagine bringing multi-colored bananas to work!

I already do this with old varieties of veggies- tigger melons, red warty thing squash, blue and white pumpkins, and more. I think a thief would come into my back yard, leave and quit drinking. Ha! At first bringing "weird" stuff to work got some comments, but after tasting, even non-gardeners watch the calendar to see when the goodies are coming in! Love it!

Do I need to provide freeze protection for my two little dwarf cavendish? San Antonio area doesn't hardly get that cold, but sometimes we do. I can bring them in, greenhouse them, cover with blankets, etc.

This is their first year. When can I expect to see bananas?

I can't wait to try out the recipes section, either. Fun, Fun, Fun!

Welcome Tgirl...? Your topsoil/ compost mix sounds good. Consider transplanting to bigger pots and adding perlite or some other amendment to the mix to assure good drainage. You don't need as much protection as in a more northern state but I'd reccomend checking out some of the cold weather threads to see what kind of protection others are giving their plants.

Thanks for all the help!

I'll be transplanting them to 18 gallon utility tubs, aka muck buckets- I already have container trees and blueberries in them. The perlite is a great idea- I'll add it.

As for "only one," I'm already thinking about finding and adding a pink, red, blue, black and any other color banana I can get my hands on. Growing unusual things is some of the most fun I have in gardening!
