Thanks, Janan! ;)

Do you keep the male Betta fish separated? I was told they'll kill each other?

I was also told that Bettas and African Dwarf frogs can live together in the same aquarium!!!

Jananas Bananas

Yes, they are all in separate tanks. I wondered if you might get a Betta and put it in with your frogs. They can have tank mates, just not other male Bettas. I think neon tetras are good tank mates for them as well as other smaller non-aggressive fish.

I'm trying to get better at photographing them! It's a work in progress. :)

The Hollyberry Lady
12-19-2011, 09:04 PM
Oh so you mean I could get one of the pretty male Betta fish but put another type of fish in there as a companion? It won't kill it?

I could ask at PetSmart and see what they have that might be suitable. It would be way cool to have fish and frogs in the same aquarium.

At some point, I'll be getting another bird. Not yet though. Still miss Henry too much.

Jananas Bananas

Yes you can, they will usually have tank mates posted somewhere, but check with the salesperson and see what they say. Some fish will try to eat their fins (like goldfish), and another aggressive breed wouldn't work either.

You are very welcome! I think since you already have an aquarium environment started, you will enjoy watching them. :)

I really do like fish and I was told tonight the frogs live at the bottom and the fish swim near the top. Hopefully it will work out for me. I would enjoy having a graceful fish to watch.

Ok then, you've talked me into it. :ha: You'll soon see a fish or two in my new aquarium. I just gotta get the living stones first.

So I called Green Earth today and I guess they don't sell the Living Stones gravel separately and I will have to go to a special aquarium strore to get it. If I use the regular colored gravel, you gotta clean it way more often. The Living Stones are a filter though, for bacteria & waste. Hopefully I can get them.

Gonna pick up a Betta fish on Friday, Janan. I'll show a shot of him. They have a lot of blue ones so that's likely what I'll end up with. I think I saw a red one too.

Yes, thanks for that link John. ;)

Here is a link for AquaBid, an online auction place for fish:

AquaBid.com - Halfmoom Betta Auctions (http://www.aquabid.com/cgi-bin/auction/auction.cgi?fwbettashm&1197296997)

They show some pretty good pictures of a variety. Just click on one and scroll to the bottom to see the picture. After looking at the females there, I think my female is a female, but I guess I will know for sure once I try to breed them.

Janan - If you want to breed them, I can give you some hints. They've bred for me sveral hundred times, probably thousands of times.

Well I sure found out a lot today. Most importantly I found out that "Green Earth" is full of sh*t!!!

I called this aquarium place today, inquiring about those so called "living stones" that supposedly act as filters and she said that their store is very sad that Green Earth sells the frogs at all, and misleads people. I felt like an idiot but I was glad to hear what she had to say.

She says that frogs can't live in stagnant water like that for months at a time, and that those rocks are no better than any other aquarium gravel. She told me I needed a filter and that I could get them just about anywhere for under 20 bucks. I now have one...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/3rd%20album/IMG_3432-1.jpg

She also told me that they likely recommended me feeding them only twice a week, so the water would stay clear! Imagine, starving the poor little creatures just so the water will stay nice!!! I was disgusted. I knew they needed more food than that. PetSmart told me I can feed them daily, which I will be from now on.

I'm so glad I made some calls and found out things. I knew that ridiculously small container Green Earth sells them in was way too tiny. How cruel.

I saw this today and just had to get it...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/3rd%20album/IMG_3430.jpg

I'm gonna keep a couple Betta fish in there too but it is a more than suitable aquarium for frogs also. I think the LED light will be quite nice. I couldn't get any other colored pebbles other than these ones...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/3rd%20album/IMG_3433.jpg

I'm gonna set it up tonight and let it run with the filter for 24 hours before I add the little frogs. Boy are they gonna be happy...and healthier. I'll get the fish on Friday.

Thanks, Janan! You've got me hooked. :ha:

Oh and I got this too...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/3rd%20album/IMG_3431-1.jpg

I was thinking of returning the other glass aquarium but now I'm starting to entertain thoughts about haveing two...nevermind. :ha: Maybe I better just see how well I get this LED one set up first.

I'll show shots soon when everything is set up...

I had never heard of "living stones" until you mentioned them. There are several other critters that can be used to help keep your aquarium clean. You can check on those if you are interested.

I have the same 360 aquarium. :ha:

John I would welcome your advice with open arms. :goteam: I have zero knowledge on fish breeding and was just going to trial and error and Google! Did you see those prices from Thailand on that AquaBid site, and paying postage too!!!! WOWZA!!!

The Hollyberry Lady
12-20-2011, 10:04 PM
Oh Janan, I love it that you have the same one! How cool is that?! :goteam:

Ok so you know that piece on the rim of the lid that looks like you can remove it? Is that so that someone can add a filter? I wanna make sure I can add the filter but have a space for the cord so the lid can stay on the aquarium. Is that the spot for another cord, in case someone wants to add something to their aquarium?

Do you think my frogs will be happy in there? Do you Betta fish like it? Is it pretty when it's lit up? I can't wait to see it. I'm just soaking the rocks now and rinsing the toys.

I've never set up an aquarium before and I'm nervous. Do I have to wash the aquarium before I fill it? What do I use to wash it? I have anti-bacterial soap. I really a nervous about doing it right. I think I have the tank set up properly and once the rocks are done soaking I'll start adding them.

Omg...how do I get the bamboo out of the other container to put in the new one?! I can't put my hand into their water with them still in there...but I gotta get that plant!

Furthermore, what's the best way to transfer the frogs to their new home?

: )

Jananas Bananas
12-20-2011, 10:20 PM
Yes that is for add ons. I only have one male betta in mine but he does like it.

No don't wash it with soap. They say a soapy film may remain and could kill the little critters. They say just rinse it really well - that's what I did with mine.

Do you have a little scoop net? I use my hands or a scoop net to move my fish. But I know you said you can't handle your frogs. Maybe you can gently pour them into it so you don't have to touch them with anything. Just don't fill your water all the way up so they will slip into the other container.

I guess I would reach in and gently pull the bamboo out. Do you have the roots buried in the little rocks? That may be the trickiest part. Do you have any peace lilies? They make great aquarium plants. I always have them so I just divided one plant into several and stuck them in all my containers. You just have to wash all the soil off their roots.

The Hollyberry Lady
12-20-2011, 10:42 PM
Oh Janan thank you...you've clarified a lot for me. I hope you don't think I'm an idiot but I've never dealt with an aquarium before.

Ok, I'll rinse things really well but no soap. Do I have to rinse out the aquarium and all the parts too?

What else do you have in there with the male Betta? Maybe you should get a couple froggies too for the bottom.

Omg I was just noticing how huge this filter is! I think it might take up too much room and block the fish from going round and round! What should I do? It fits, but barely. I didn't see any smaller ones but I could check somewhere else. I was hoping to get them in their new home within 24 hours though. This thing is gigantic!

I don't have a scoop net but they told me the frogs jump out of them anyway and to be careful when transferring them. Something else for me to worry about! :ha:

: )

Jananas Bananas
12-20-2011, 10:58 PM
We really need Jordan's input here. And Cam's too. They both have aquarium experience and mine is limited at best! But I am TRYING to help! :ha: Yes, I would definitely rinse anything really well that has to do with the aquarium.

I doubt the little critters will mind the filter if it fits, even barely. If they can't get by it they will just go under it or turn around and go the other way. Does it have a suction? I mean they wouldn't get sucked up into it would they? I'm not trying to worry you, but I don't know what it does.

I don't have anything in with the bettas right now though I will get them some tank mates soon. They are all right next to each other for company though.

The Hollyberry Lady
12-20-2011, 11:17 PM
Ok I didn't think of that...that they'd swim under it! I'm in a panic over here. There are suctions though and the filter leaves maybe an inch and a half between it and the middle piece in the tank.

Ok I'll rinse everything very well. The pebbles are looking good and I used a spaghetti strainer to clean off any dust or debris.

The filter looks like a real good one and it promises to keep the water sparkling clean. I guess I'll keep it and give it a try.

I think you're doing just great with your advice Janan and I'm feeling better about the whole thing now. I was nearly in a sweat earlier! :ha:

Nope I don't have those plants you mentioned but wish I did. I just have the bamboo for now. Should I keep the other glass aquarium to use as a place to keep the creatures if I'm cleaning or making changes? Do I have to test my water before I add the frogs or fish? I'm using pure fresh spring water to fil the tank.

: )

Jananas Bananas
12-20-2011, 11:59 PM
Just pick a small one (spathiphyllum) up the next time you go to one of your nurseries. They are easy to find, and they are the same ones that they sell in the Pet stores for about a 200 per cent mark up. I can usually find a nice full one for 3 bucks or so at Lowe's.

I think your Spring water will be pure. They make a water conditioner for the little critters. Did they not have a kit for you with your little froggies? If so what came with it?

An extra aquarium would never hurt, but they would probably be OK in any kind of temporary container while theirs is being cleaned. I think I read that you only change about 1/3 of the water at a time.

The Hollyberry Lady
12-21-2011, 12:16 AM
Yes I've been reading about that...changing only 3/4's of the water. I guess the bacteria that lives on the stones helps to convert their waste.

How often do you actually have to change the water if you have a filter? I know the filter must be changed every 4 weeks, but I wondered about the water.

Yup, it was a kit and I have the soil conditioner. It says one teasppon per 10 gallons though. I have a three gallon tanks so I guess I should add a 1/4 teaspoon?

I think the spring water will be pure too...and plus I'm gonna wait a bit before adding the fish so if there is any bad stuff leftover, it can evaporate. If they can live in that crap water they're in now, I know the new home's water will be like heaven for them.

I bet the air bubbles will help the plants to grow as well. Is that lily a big one? I only want small plants or ones that I can prune back.

: )

Jananas Bananas
12-21-2011, 12:29 AM
Yes they are small plants. They are the same plants that they are selling at the pet stores for the aquariums. Yes the oxygen in the water helps the plants too and also the critter poop.

The Hollyberry Lady
12-21-2011, 12:58 AM
Janan, you're gonna laugh...

I took off the lid to their container and saw that some of the bamboo plant was sticking up out of the water a little bit. When I pulled, it lifted up with complete ease because it has no roots yet!!! :ha: I was worried for nothing.

It's in the new aquarium now and everything is ready to plug in and start up! It looks great and everything is where I want it to be. I'll show it when I have the frogs and fish in there on Friday. Gonna go boot this sucker up shortly...

Thanks for all your help, Janan! ;)

Jananas Bananas

OK, I will be waiting for the final result pictures! :lurk:

The Hollyberry Lady
12-21-2011, 01:08 AM
Ok but don't mind that big old ugly black filter when I do! :ha:

Uh oh...I just thought of something!

Now that the aquarium is full, won't it be a long drop for the froggies when I put them in? They're just tiny little guys.

The Hollyberry Lady
12-21-2011, 01:26 PM
Thanks Janan. It really is a beautiful aquarium and the lights are too nice. Designer is a good way to describe it.

I love the blue light...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/3rd%20album/IMG_3533.jpg

Notice there are lots of bubbles blowing into the water? I fixed whatever was wrong with the airpump. Instead of attaching that tube to that little rod inside the cylinder, I took it off and just ran the tube loosely down inside the cylinder. It's now blowing, like you said it should! Now you can even hear a bubbly sound. :D

Do you think I should add the frogs tonight?

The Hollyberry Lady
12-21-2011, 07:22 PM
Janan, I wanna see your aquarium too. Do have gravel at the bottom? What light setting do you use?

They just got a new shipment of Betta fish in so maybe I can get a real special one on Friday. I'm transferring my little frogs into their new home tonight!!! :goteam:

The Hollyberry Lady
12-22-2011, 06:55 PM
My frogs are now in their new home!!! I brought some of the water to PetSmart and they tested it for me and told me I could go straight home and put them in!!!

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/3rd%20album/IMG_3565.jpg

They totally love their new home! I had such fun watching them for an hour after I put them in and I could see how much they were enjoying it.

One of them is extremely comical too. He likes to let the filter suck him in, but then when he gets too close he swims away, but it's the way he does it...it's hysterical. He kept going back for more and you could tell he was playing. It was just so funny though...you had to be there. I actually had tears rolling down, that's how funny it was. I hope he does it again later.

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/3rd%20album/IMG_3561.jpg

Lord knows how long it's been since they've been able to actually swim and they are sure loving it, swimming and playing in the bubbles. They love the false plant I put in there too, and I watched them playing hide & seek with each other. The change in them is very noticeable and I'm just glad they're so happy.

Ok so I got a Betta Fish tonight! :goteam:

I had to get a female even though I wanted a male because they told me that male Betta fish can be aggressive and they could harm my frogs! He also said that more than 3 creatures for a 3 gallon tank would be too many, so I left it at that.

She's not in the big aquarium yet with Finley & Filbert, but she will be. Gotta name her too. I'll show shots of her tomorrow...

I am thinking my "female" is a young male again. He is starting to blow bubble nests and showing aggression to the male in the aquarium next to him. :(

Thanks Janan, about Flora. Love your shots too. The colors of your fish are amazing.

Maybe you should keep the males separated so they can't even see each other because I heard it just keeps them constantly upset to see other males in the area. Just a thought. ;)

My fish and frogs are getting along great. :D

Thanks Sherry!

I keep a good eye on them so I know they aren't in a constant state of aggravation. Some blowing is actually very healthy for them because it allows them to exercise their fins. The veil tails (which all but one of mine are) have very heavy fins, and they will become kind of hump backed and their fins won't ever stretch out if they aren't stimulated and exercised. I worry about Grumpy, because I think he is older and quite lazy compared to the other boys. He couldn't care less that their are other boys close to him, so I try to get him to exercise a couple of times a day with a mirror and have succeeded a few times. He is magnificent when in full blow, but I am holding the mirror and not the camera when he is doing it. Here are some shots of him that show what I am talking about.

I can't get over how gorgeous that fish is, Janan. WoW! :goteam:

I wish I could've got a male Betta and even had one all picked out but the sales guy sauntered over and started asking questions and told me I should get a female, to make sure my frogs wouldn't get attacked. Bob raised Bettas for years though and told me later that he didn't think a male Better would have bothered with the frogs. I like Flora though and think she's pretty, so I'm not disappointed. :D

Have you named all of your fish yet...besides Grumpy? :ha:

: )

Jananas Bananas
12-26-2011, 11:53 PM
:ha: No Grumpy is the only one I have named. He is such a lazy butt! I had to get him because of his color! (DUH!) Thanks, I think so too.

I am trying to let their personalities dictate what I name them and they are all so different. I like George from Curious George, but they are all really curious. I may stay with Disney names, I just haven't decided yet.

I don't think a male would have bothered your frogs either, but I'm no expert, so I didn't speak up. Often those darned sales people aren't very knowledgeable either though. :) Out of the 5 I have, I really only have one that is fairly wired. I really love watching them.

I personally like the more colored up females more :)

But females can be pretty aggressive also. Especially if you have a male in the tank and the tank is under ten gallons. The females will pick on the males fins.

I had a pretty colored female a year or two ago. I had it for quite a while. I had it in with my guppies and everything like that :)

I think that unless you have a "wired" one like Janan said, they shouldn't be aggressive to anything. Unless said other thing starts to get in its way or pick on its tails. So I always trust the females a bit easier ;)

Nice tarantula :) Nice to know someone else on here likes them other than me :ha:

I wanted to get a red kneed one, but they were gone and so I got myself a Chilean rose tarantula (often called rose haired, but they don't really have true hair so I go with this name). It used to hide all the time but for some reason this year it is being pretty active.

And a little while after I brought mine home it molted :D I used the skin to sex it, and luckily for me it is a female :D :woohoonaner: so it will live quite a while if it isn't old already :)

I also had a pink toed tarantula, only about the size of a half dollar but it had a bad molt.

Then I have that scorpion :)

Maybe I need to get more pictures :ha:

Kewl! =D I thought i was the only one that liked tarantulas. Your really lucky you got a female. is your Chilean Rose the pink or reddish brown one? I hope you post pictures!
my first tarantula will be a Brazilian Black and White! =D there out of stock now but im on a waiting list at Generalexotics.com so im waiting for a email. They like flicking hairs but i can use gloves to handle it. then i want to get a Mexican red knee, a Cobalt Blue, and a Green Bottle Blue. i may get the Cobalt Blue next time because there really fast!
I want the glow in the dark water dishes too. =D

Btw, they have Desert Hairy and Tanzanian Flat Rock scorpions at that site too but the Flat Rocks are out of stock.
Oh and Mexican Red Knees can live 30 years if its a female!

I didn't take a picture of quite a few of them, as they were not out at the moment.

Great shots, Jordan. Sorry I missed ya. I remember being on a bed once with tall rubber boots on, because our tarantula has escaped from it's cage!

Grumpy is funny, Janan. He looks so stern and serious but yet he's so pretty looking. :ha: You named him well.

Trying to find some shots I took a few days ago...

If any of my pets escaped I would be up all night trying to find them :ha: I would be too worried that they might get hurt.

Nothing of mine has escaped yet, other than my puffer fish. It jumped out of the tank and I didn't know it. And it was out of the tank for almost two hours! It came back to life after being put back in the tank though. It's all better now :)

Well it wasn't exactly my tarantula Jordan...I was afraid of it. :ha: It belonged to my boyfriend at the time. We were out for the evening and when we returned home, it wasn't in it's cage! Of course it wasn't far though and he found her behind the bookshelf.

Thought this was a cute shot of Filbert and his reflection. He was looking for food at the surface...

I think I scared him with the camera in this shot and he said "I'm out of here"...
