I am going to get a Musa Basjoo banana plant soon, so I have some questions:
1) Can they live in clay soil?
2) Is it too late to plant one in the ground?
3) What would happen if I were to leve a pup attached to the Musa Basjoo banana plant mother?

1) Banana's can live in many kinds of soils, there are members here, who grow them in clay soils, but I don't really know, what you have to do to make it more banana friendly.
2) Depends on your zone, on the plant size, whether you can keep it indoors this year...
3) In general, nothing wrong. In time the pup would live as a single unit, but the whole system would be stronger thanks to connection between them and the larger the corm, the better chances you have that the plant will overwinter well.
Good luck!
What zone are you in. It might be ok to plant one in a warmer area, here in zone 6 I would pot it up in the largest container you're able to and plant out in spring. My soil here is clay but so highly amended that the plants grow vigorously so it definitely can be done.

Hey Blake ;) if your north of zone 7 i wouldn't recammend you plant your basjoo yet this year, you need to pot it up in a Good potting soil E.G: 50% manure,25% peat(or pine bark fines) and 25% perlite,i wouldn't use Miricle-Grow it really sux, anyway your basjoo pup that im sending you is about a foot tall and really needs to go in the garage this first winter to survive-or you could bring it inside and place it in front of a bright window, you can plant it this coming spring and it should do really well, when you recieve your pup it will have no leaves DONT WORRY i remove the leaves so it can adjust to being removed from the mother and focus on root growth, after you pot it up and roots grow it will grow so fast you wont beleive it,and new leaves will grow in no time, make sure you keep it moist and give it part shade untill you see growth-and then put it in full sun for best results-Brad

I also have a clay soil, so I add lots of amendments, including peat moss and compost. In my zone7, I would not plant a basjoo outside until next spring. Follow Bob's advice and pot it up for the duration. Remember to avoid overwatering your potted basjoo to avoid rot. Good luck-the clump in my avatar started as one basjoo 3 years ago.

I had extra basjoo corms a couple years ago. So i planted them right in the clay soil in Ohio in my yard. They grew right away with no problems and in fact one is still living in clay soil in a pot! Its four foot tall also.
You can't get any more "clay" than central Oklahoma. My Basjoo is Very healthy and about knee-high. I used a 2' diameter, 2' deep hole for inground. Filled the hole with 1/2 sand & 1/2 compost. For best over-wintering results, I always put my nanner plants near sunny windows. And never water them while storing them. I lost a big one (16') to corm-rot that way. Also, I've been over-wintering for 3 years now with only that single loss.

Very nice, Blake!
Good to see you on here also. I should receive your seeds soon. Your basjoo will transform from ugly stump to banana beauty in no time flat. Wait until you see...
Mine looked just like that. You should have a red vein up the center of the leaves which Lorax tells me is the hallmark of Basjoo.
Hope you didn't have to pay a fortune for it - I would have sent ya one for free next Spring. I do wish you success - this thread is chalked full of great information!
My indoor basjoo recently crashed to the floor, but what a hardy little guy because it is now growing once again. The fall only set it back for two or three days!!!
: O
Anyway, good luck with your plant, Blake.

I tried to overwinter 4 basjoo tc starts outside last year with heavy mulch in zone 6. Mild winter, yet only one survived. Thanks for the thread. Will put my 27 young tc starts indoors for first winter, just to be safe. They do look great outdoors right now but still kinda small. Didn't receive tc starts till June.:waving::waving::waving::goteam::goteam:
