Had all the coconuts cut down from our 3 big trees in the front as usual this time of year - the hurricane season is a'coming!! Relatively few nuts this year - probably only 35-40 - last year they had to bring a truck to take them away - this year - 2 wheelbarrow loads. Also had the guys trim the dead leaves off the tall bananas - had to hold the ladder for them while they hacked away - but the compost bin is now full to bursting with good stuff. Some coconuts went to neighbours for coco water in exchange for bananas as we are in between bunches, but the rest the gardeners took to sell.

How are you composting your palm material?

I started a mini-pile of fronds (not coconuts) from some of the misc. palms in my yard. Seems to take forever to breakdown. Any tips/tricks?

Haha Mark! You know that I am not young or fit enough for that!!

Tomk - I don't try to compost palm leaves - they are too woody - I just use the banana leaves and pstems - in fact all their trimmings, but because some of them are so tall, I had to get Antonio to do it for me. Some of the tall plants like Saba, Orinoco, Blue Java, Tall Red ( and now 1000 fingers and some of my mystery ladyfinger types) are so big that someone needs to stand on tiptoe on the top of the tallest ladder we have to trim them (and it's not me - I get too wobbley)

Bepah and Scuba_Dave - sad to say that after a while coco-locos and drinks with umbrellas become old hat! But Jim makes the best Margaritas on the island - with our own lemons. Surprisingly lemons are never seen here commercially, while limes are everywhere! Who knows why.

OK Dalmatiansoap - I will tell you when it is launched!

I know it's a joke, but regardless, you would have to calculate a damn important differential as the starting speed and direction for this poor nut not to be swallowed by Gulf stream. :D
Although it is reported that several ships turned off their engines and in time were carried very closely to Portugal. ;)

I actually like eating the coconut meat itself
But I guess that gets old hat too
Up here I go diving for lobster
I had it every weekend one year & was sort of sick of it

Dave - yes you get used to what is available locally, and the first years we were here we used to save the coconuts for cocolocos and the water. The coconut meat is available here both as mature and immature - both delicious!

I know what you mean about the lobster - sometimes that is all people want here as if it is the best thing around - what is it with them?
