My Frederick only has one fruit on it so far but I'm hoping for more. I had 5 flowers open on Friday, 20 on Saturday, and 7 today. I tried to help pollinate with a Q-tip yesterday and today.

Great news, Harv! How are you feeling now? Moving any better?

Thanks, Howard. Not doing great, waiting to have MRIs of my shoulder and knee. I over-exerted myself or something last Thursday and felt like I was going to die for a day and a half, to be honest. Feeling better now but heavily reliant upon hydrocodone to manage my shoulder pain.

I need to take an updated photo of my plant that was planted on July 1. I knew the thing would grow like a weed but I'm still amazed by how much it's grown.

No problem Frederick's fruit will drop from the vine when ripe no need to get on a ladder:ha:

I think I just need to find another area to plant a few of these and grow them as a crop. I've got a ready buyer, as you know. Maybe I could grow a few on some concrete reinforcement wire in a strip about 100' long. I could do that along one of my drain ditches or roadways.

My labor contractor just came by and he noticed my 'Frederick'. He asked me if he could have some leaves of it as he makes a tea from them which helps a person calm down if they are nervous, etc. I think I heard this of a different species before but wonder if this may also be true for P. edulis.

Although the first frost hit my garden last night, my Marian passion flower (a new variety I got from a grower in FL last year) really responded to the warm weather we had 2 weeks ago and put on a pretty impressive show of buds and flowers that I wasn't expecting this late in the year. And now that it's been in the house for a week, it looks like it wants to continue to impress me!

The fruit of the Frederick seedling looks more yellow than the Frederick. Is that because of a stage of development or do you think they're different?

They are different.I did get ripe fruit last year with very few seed and pulp. The fruit was more yellow than Fredericks. From what I understand most Edulis Hybrid are a combination of Edulis Sims and Edulis Flavicarpa,so the plant from seed could take the characteristics from either one.Maybe this year I will get a fruit with enough pulp so I can taste it.I also have seedlings from seedlings no flowers yet

Here's a comparison of my Passiflora edulis 'Frederick' from when it was planted July 28, 2010 and today, June 16, 2011. Looks happy!

I counted at least 38 new flowers which opened today. I saw this flower being worked over by a honeybee. I don't know if the bee was actually getting pollen to the stigma and being an effective pollinator, but it did have quite a bit of pollen on it's back and that's a good sign.

I have this 'weed' vine thingy that grows in the back yard from time to time, and each time I trim it back, it always regrows. Never really knew what it was except an annoying weed. Well, after looking at all these passion flower photos, I notice that it MUST be a passion flower of some sort since it is a dead ringer form some of the light purple ones posted here. There is a major difference however, the blooms on the one in my backyard are between the size of a quarter and a half-dollar, and never any larger than that. The fruit that I've seen is generally the size of a grape or smaller. In spite of the small size, it is identical to many of your pics. I'll have to take a photo next time it blooms with a coin in the pic for size comparison. Nice to finally know what the 'weed' is even if I don't know what type.

Any flowers yet ?

I guess I have enough old logs or whatever around here that I've got some carpenter bees without having to do anything to encourage them. I planted a 'Frederick' passionfruit vine last July and this year it's large enough to put out a lot of flowers. I did some hand pollination last week but today the vine had over 100 flowers open up. I'm glad I saw this bee show up to do the work for me. I did see a paper wasp chase the carpenter bee away a couple of times. I wish I could get rid of the wasps for good.

Nope. It needs to grow back more. I never knew they had 'mini' ones. The leaves look like a three-toed birds footprint, and they are also small. It has the characteristic tendrils, too. The tendrils were what annoyed me most since they were winding around some of my other plants, and that is why I started cutting the buggar back all the time. I've so far been unable to kill it though; it is a stubborn plant once established.

Howard after reading Tony's referenced article about the many medicinal/pharmecutical uses of the passion plant/fruit, it's no wonder your bees drift off to lala land after visiting your passion flowers! Now if only the grasshoppers in my yard went to sleep before they consumed portions of my Monika's flowers!

We have found that using a floral spray of 1/2 cup of malasses, 1 tbsp of liquid detergent and orange oil, if you can get it, will keep the hopper away. Thay cannot digest sugar and will either leave of die. Works for us as we had a multitude of them last year but very few now.

That would explain why it grows like a weed here. I believe that as the fruit ripen, they take on a yellowish tinge.

I have checked that type P. edulis on line, and I think you are right on. Tks!

At present we have incarnata, floetida and 5 others that I forgot to write down their names. I expect them to grow rapidly here in this warm humid Florida. The rains will be more regular so they should be happy. The floetida was started from seed and we have several other seeds waiting to germinate. Wish me luck. the incarnata were growing in our pasture and had to be removed since they are toxic to cattle.

Some of these Passiflora only need to be cross pollinated to give edible fruit . I have at least 13 different varieties flowering right now,but I don't have the energy to had pollinate all of them.

My labor contractor just came by and he noticed my 'Frederick'. He asked me if he could have some leaves of it as he makes a tea from them which helps a person calm down if they are nervous, etc. I think I heard this of a different species before but wonder if this may also be true for P. edulis.

I've made tea from P. incarnata three times in the last two weeks. The tea is actually very nice if the leaves are allowed to dry for a few days before brewing. My first brew was made with fresh leaves, stems, flowers, and buds and was okay. The second brew was dried first and had a rich flavor. This tea really helped me to calm down, and I got a great sleep from it, but I didn't fall asleep any earlier than normal. :(

I counted over 100 flowers one day a month or so ago. It's on a second wave of flowering now. It's hard to see the fruits buried under the leaves but I would guess I've got 50-100 fruits.

They are edible but insipid. Very vigorous, great pollen donor for xing other passiflora for fruit. This is the one to use to get fruit on the Ruby Glow and many other passiflora.Very easy to root from cutting and seed are easy to germinate.

Tony gave me a fruit of this a few weeks ago. It has a lot of similarities to "Giant Granadilla (http://www.hort.purdue.edu/newcrop/morton/giant_granadilla.html)" (Passiflora quadrangularis). Based on just the single sample I've had so far, I'd say the taste is good. Also -- like the giant grenadilla, I enjoy the thick rind (without the skin) as a mystery fruit in salad, pastries, and on desserts. Unfortunately, every 3 to 5 years a slight freeze occurs here and wipes out giant granadilla. I've given up on it.

Anyone Tried to grow Passiflora ligularis sweet Granadilla inside as a house plant to get fruit? I'm trying to germinate some seeds and want to try to get some fruit. I eat it every time I'm on vacation in Colombia but I'd get it here.

I have a couple seedlings I'll be growing outdoors.I'm sure you can get it to fruit indoors with enough light

I sent an alert about the spam messages early this morning and a few hours later emailed Jarred offering to be a moderator for the primary purpose of getting rid of this stuff but I think they're all busy staring at the big moon. ;)

Just walked the dog and tried to get her to howl at the moon.

So I'm out there howling all by myself - again.

What do they use to make jugo de parcha. It's everywhere in Puerto Rico.

JUGO DE PARCHA

Para 2 personas
4 maracuyas
4 tazas de agua
3 cucharadas de azúcar
White rum – lots and lots
hielo

Slightly edited version.

I will be starting my first foray into growing passiflora in a few weeks. When the seedlings are ready will plant most of them over the fence next door in the vacant lot. They are P. incarnata and P incense. Tony has confirmed that they are very invasive and will run rhizomes underground under fences and into the neighbors yards.

So they go in the vacant lot that has a 30 ft brazilian pepper tree which will be scalped of all new growth. Planted around the tree they have a big trellis to take over. Have been composting my yard debris for years there so they will have a good boost. Tree is 15 ft from fence and should make controlling invasiveness doable.

A few will be containerized with a big tomato cage for a trellis.

With the depressed housing market I should be able to enjoy those passies for years. Fifty percent of the lots in my area are still un-built-on and that's the reason we still have bobcats, possum, cotton rats, snakes and armadillos. OH MY!
