The man selling plants from his pickup came by again, and he mostly had roses and anthuriums this time - but always some orchids. So..... naturally I had to buy some!

This is a darker version of a dendrobium I already have - but too pretty to resist.

There are rarely labels on the plants, so no idea what this is.

Sorry the closeup is blurred, but is this another dendrobium, a hybrid maybe? I asked the man what conditions they liked, and he replied as always "si senora, sol y sombre"! But they must be fairly tough to survive being driven around in a truck all day with a bit of shade netting over them, and this is where I get my phals and cattleyas too.

But Bob, think of it this way, we can keep our beer in the garage and it stays cold with out freezing and our icecream on the patio without thawing, more room in the fridge and the freezer!!!! :bananas_b Gotta try look on the bright side of our northern situation, only 5 more months till spring :waving: :bananas_b :nanadrink:

Haha! and you have reliable utilities (mostly). It is rare that we have power, phone and internet all at the same time! And you don't write a shopping list before you go to the store - you buy what is good today, then come home and look for a recipe that matches! (Just to make you feel better!)

No Stumpy - he never knows unless it is one of the very few that have a label. I asked him but all he would say was that it needed sun and shade - big help!! I would love to know what it is myself - hence the picture. Perhaps someone will know.

Ok where to start? Is it at least a orchid? or something else?

Yes - it is an orchid, and my guess is that it is an Oncidium or Odontoglossum hybrid.

I'd go with Odont over Oncidum - Oncs don't tend to have that flower profile, and they generally flower on racemes, not singles or doubles. Actually, it looks like a South American hybrid...
Stumpy - trying to grow orchids of any type from seed is difficult at best, so it's actually much easier to order the grown plant. Ecuagenera sells some orchids that are very similar to the one of Cassie's that everyone's flipping over. Click here for Odontoglossums (http://www.ecuagenera.com/epages/whitelabel4.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/ecuagenera/Categories/Orchid_Species/Odontoglossum) and click here from Oncidiums. (http://www.ecuagenera.com/epages/whitelabel4.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/ecuagenera/Categories/Orchid_Species/Oncidium)
Here are some pics of my orchids for comparison purposes - the first two are Odonts and the second two are Oncidiums.

Oh, and your mystery yellow one reminds me strongly of an orchid called "Lycaste" although it's blooming upright so I might be wrong.

Thanks Lorax - I think you are right. But it is very difficult to pinpoint them with all the new hybrids and varieties. Easiest just to enjoy them for themselves and not fret over a name. Your plants are beautiful!!

The form of the yellow flowered plant almost looks like one of the cattleyas - maybe!

The white with purlpe splotches-Odontoglossum gloriosum, I google image searched for the last 4 hrs. and found a pic that looks VERY close. not sure how to copy link to the site
Guillermo Angulo's Index of Orchid Images (http://www.victoria-adventure.org/more_than_links/guillermo_orchid_index.html) is this it? I know nothing ( SCHULTZY ) from "Hogans Heros" tv show ( Dating myself ) about orchids, other than they're pretty and from what I hear hard to grow here!

Jay's Orchid Encyclopedia (http://www.orchidspecies.com/odontgloriosum.htm) has a pic that's very similar for O. gloriosum.
Buzzwinder - you can link to whatever internets tube you wish by copying the URL from your browser's address bar, then pasting it here. Or, you can use the little button above the post window, the one that looks like the Earth with a chainlink, and paste it in there.
Cassie: here's a Lycaste orchid (http://www.orchidspecies.com/lycastearomatica.htm) - you can see the structural similarity to the Catts, but I've never actually seen a yellow Cattleya. I don't think that the one in the pic is your species, though.

Bill, Lorax - that o. gloriosum is so very similar that I think mine belongs around there. The sexual parts are a little different but the rest looks close. Thanks for all the legwork while I was out at a birthday party :0517: and also thanks for the orchid links!
Lorax - the lycaste orchid is very interesting but not quite there. The reason I wondered about cattleyas is the bifoliate habit, but then the flowers (but not the leaves) are very like dendrobium "Gatton Sunray". C forbesii comes in yellow, but the flowers are different.
Image (http://www.victoria-adventure.org/more_than_links/guillermo2004/orchids2/cattleya_hybrids.html) - this is a yellow one.
Thanks for your help!! Keeps me busy too.

And there you have, in a nutshell, the difficulty in figuring out the exact identitiy of any orchid. It's even harder for me here, since I live in orchid central; we have over 4000 endemic species and then the growers also offer exotics and hybrids etc etc etc. The most frustrating for me was coming back from a hike with pics of an orchid that looked like a Cattleya from the flower, a Vanilla from the smell, a Dendrobium from the leaves, but had the terrestrial habit of an Epidendrum and was growing above the treeline. I had to send a picture to Ecuagenera to get the true ID - something called a Sobralia. Pic below.
Actually, I'll have a boo through the Sobralia gallery and see if anything matches your yellow one; the leaf habit and flower style seem to match.

Haha! Lorax - sounds as if we are both in the same boat (but I bow to your superior knowledge). However it is all fun and interesting (and keeps us out of the bars and nightclubs!) Did I really say that???
