Could a few hot days have caused this?

Our red banana has been growing beautifully so far this summer. But last week on a few days I noticed the new leaf almost burned or browned on one side (pics attached)





You can see how the unraveling of the new leaf is all brown and almost stuck together.

Any idea what could have caused this? We did have excessive heat here in San Diego that week, almost 95 degrees and very humid. Just wondering if this could be a watering issue or something?

I can't view your pictures because they are posted on a site that requires membership.

However, I am in San Diego county and yes the temperatures have increased in the last few weeks. I have two beds of bananas which contain two plats each. Each plat is currently receiving 70 gallons of fertigated water twice per week and showing no signs of stress.

The plant you have Ensete Maurelli is an awesome plant.

For me this plant will show signs stress pretty quick especially in a pot.
There is a good chance the leaf has experienced some sort of heat related issue.

Events which could cause leaf issues are over heated containers in the sun,overwatering,too much fertilizer,winning pool water.
If the issue is confined to one leaf you trim the unsightly part off.

The leaf that is brown was the outter leaf of the cigar roll. As you can also see on the 2nd cigar roll the out leaf is brown. This is sunburn of the new tender leaves.


Can you put up a temporary sun screen to protect the plants?

Many thanks for the reply. This is kind of what I thought happened since it was during the 2 super hot days we had. Yes, I can try and get something up to protect it during the next heat wave. Do you think I just let these 2 new burned leaves grow out in full? Or would you trim them off?

they are green. leave them. you can trim off the burned stuff if it offends you. pretty maurelli

What Beam said ... The other 1/2 of the leaf is good, don't cut it off.
