Are they winter hardy enough to leave them in the ground in zone 7?

For any other people reading this forum on cold hardy bananas, the response was that they are not cold hardy below zone 11.

Don't know where you got your info but we keep Variegated Dwarf Nam Wa in the ground in zone 8.

Thanks for responding. In response to your concern about where I got my information, I received a PM from another member with this information:
"In Reply to your Post Re: Super Dwarf Nam Wa Updates:
No sorry they are not....
Maybe in zones 11 and up..."
At first I assumed it was you, but then noticed it was another member. Either way, it doesn't look like I'll be planting them in zone 7.

Very few (if any) edibles that I'm aware of, will survive inground in zone 7. I'm zone 9b and I get lucky some winters mine come back after the frost damage to the leaves.

Having thought about it, I'm thinking there might be 2 different views of "cold hardy." If a person expects the banana plant to stand year round with green leaves 12 months, then even a basjoo like I have is not cold hardy in my zone. For my purposes, I would use your definition that the plant can be left in the ground and expected to come back up in the spring.
The only banana plants I've tried are the basjoo, which I've had for several years and a "Mekong Giant" which did not survive one winter.

Yes, good point. I didn't realize he was in Puerto Rico. I hope you are safe.

A guy I work with is from PR and still has family there. He says it is rough and supplies are limited, but the death toll is lower than he would have thought and they are largely safe now. BUT most everything is damaged or destroyed. Farmers are going to have a rough time. I hope kieth is ok , I'm anxiously waiting to see a post here as I plan to buy some more variegated bananas to plant in spring if he has any.
