Hello,

This is my first post. I'm looking forward to learning as much I can about growing Bananas. Have planted one Banana Tree in my front yard. Have no idea what kind it is. A friend of mine gave me a 'seedling' (not sure if thats what you call it), about 1 to 2 feet tall in a pot. Have since planted it in the ground in my front yard. It's now about 6 feet tall. Have noticed a 'seedling', not sure how long it has been there. Will get a picture posted here soon.

Hi and a very welcome,

Probably your friend gave you a 'Pup'. If it is a seedling it is not a dessert-banana.
If you upload a picture you can start a thread in the banana identification forum.

Aloha!

For your first lesson....

Banana is herb, not a tree.

The biggest banana cultivar, going as high as 65 ft, is taller than many trees, and are called Musa ingens from Papua New Guinea, but still are technically herb, and never a tree.

Buzzwinder,

you can search for "musa ingens" in this forum and there are some nice pics that I have posted or linked within.

Kuauboy,

As always, even for me, there are new things to learn when dealing with bananas, most especially if you are trying to push the envelope with what can be done with them. This forum is full of friendly, sharing people. Some will also bore you to death, like from me when I get carried away to post at times.
