I had an opportunity to meet member "Crazy Banana" yesterday, and she is wonderful! She gave my son and I a tour of her garden, and sent me home with a "small" pup. 😉
By sliding it all the way to the dash in the suburban, it just barely fit, and was driven home Phoenix! We only had one incedent, when a small slug crawled out, and onto my wife's arm! She and my daughter screamed so loud I almost drove off the highway! Lol, but all safe and sound and in the ground now. As for me, I'm of to homedepot for supplies to build a tall shade cover while this guy grows some roots!
Thanks again, let me know if you ever make it to Phoenix!

Thank you hybridpower. It was a pleasure to meet you and your family yesterday.
How fun to see that the plant made it already in the ground and it looks great.
The shade cloth seems to be an excellent idea. I hope the plant will grow and fruit fast for you. Keep us all posted and stop by anytime you are in San Diego again.
And ahhh, thank you for taking one of my "unwanted pets" to Arizona. I hate those slugs.
So what kind is that "little" pup? And that's a pretty darned far way to drive for a banana...

It is a Blue Java and "only" about 6-7' tall. :)
No way is too far for a hard core banana enthusiast and to actually see by the fruit bunch of the mother plant that you get what you want ;)

Lol, yes its a long drive, but officially the trip was to go to Legoland, the meetup and the banana were just a bonus! It's a blue Java.

However, meeting other gardeners has put some miles on my old rusty and not so dependable truck. CA is outside of my comfort zone I fear. Sad. ;)

It was well worth the visit, and I'd do it again in a heartbeat! Takes me 5 hours to hit the beach for a few days, cool off, and visit with other banana enthusiasts. Well worth the time in the car to me!
Kind of OT but I was offered a decent sized potted Ice Cream for $3. "It has delicious fruit."
"Oh, I've heard there's some controversy about Ice Creams. Is this a Blue Java?"
This guy is very knowledgeable about tropical fruits but he looked at me like I had 3 heads so I didn't pursue the discussion.
I might have bought it (what's $3?) but I already have a Namwah (that is what the false ones are, isn't it?)
If I'm wrong, I'll be back to visit him with not enough money to adopt that 10' Macadamia that's calling my name but a spare $3 for the potted Ice Cream.

That is fantastic news. Congratulations and thanks for the update.
Keep doing what you are doing and I bet that next year you will have the first confirmed Blue Java fruit bunch in Arizona.

So a quick update on the Java, even with two layers of shade cloth, the original leaves from before the transplant burned like crazy. They just weren't ready for Phoenix sun; I was hoping the larger plant would have a better ability to deal with it, but I guess sunburned is sunburned regardless of size. So I defaulted to what I always do, removed all of the leaves, and kept the ground moist until it sprouted leaves. As of now it has 3 full size leaves again, and the fourth is about to enroll, the good news is that the new leaves no longer sunburn. Also that small pup picture that I showed you on my last post, now has six leave! It is about 2 feet tall. Doing awesome! Overall, I'd say successful transplant at this point. Thanks again Crazy Banana.

So, quick update. The hot part of the summer is over, and I'm happy to report things are going well. We had a big wind and rain storm last week, that even brought a little hale with it, and shredded the leaves up pretty badly but otherwise things are no worse for wear. You'll also see that the pup is doing really well. Remember that I had to remove all of the leaves from this so everything you see here is new Arizona growth, none worse for wear for the summer sun it looks like.
