Hello all!!!!
We'll I live in the new state Moalaska...lol and was wondering if my hardy bananas will survive this long spell of way below normal temps.
I have several hardy bananas and hardy fan palms that have been in the ground for at least 5 years some longer, I can't recall the temps ever being this low ( few nights in the negatives) as long as I had them.
The bananas are under about a foot of mulch and the Palms I build cold frames for with mulch mounded to the lowest fronds.
So what do you all think?

So when you were in MD/OH did you have hardy bananas?
Never raised bananas up north; never thought to do so. (I was into figs.) Got a DC this past Mother's Day. She got toasted by 25F so I cut off what was mushy. She's now about 4' tall with a new leaf emerging. I have 4 pups in pots that were small enough to protect so they're fine. I'm not the one to advise about zone 7 or lower banana farming but others here are very experienced and can commiserate with you. You should post in Member Introductions; it's a great way to let others know about you.

Ok so maybe this is a better question......what is the coldest anyone has experienced and had their hardy bananas come back with just about a foot of mulch on themHow cold did yours get? My DC got toasted at 25F. I just cut her back to about 4' tall to take out the dead and rot rather than let it fester; that ugly stump is sprouting new leaves. Depending on the varieties you're growing and the temps they experienced, you may lose the P-stem. If the ground under your mulch did not freeze, the corm may have survived.
I keep talking about my poor DC; this is her a couple of days ago.

This is how they do it in a garden across the river.
I have seen it also in northern Michigan.

Only had about two nights, three with last nights when all three nights were only just freezing.
We had more rain than cold nights.
