Hey everyone. I've been interested in TCing for a while now, and now I just might have the opportunity to try it. I'm looking at purchasing a basic kit from Kitchen Culture Kits (http://www.kitchenculturekit.com/kit.htm), and then propagating a few hundred banana plants, mostly for either donation to low income families through the local food bank or for selling at the campus garden's weekly garden sale. In particular, I'm looking to TC Misi Luki Namwah, Manzano, Orinoco, Blue Java (the real deal), and possibly Pisang Klotek. I have a few questions:
I am on a budget. Is there a cheap way I can prepare a clean space so that I can minimize contamination?
The Kitchen Culture Kit comes with a few plant hormones, but it's designed for African Violet plants. Will these hormones work fine on banana plants too? (In particular it says that BAP induces shoot formation in African Violets.)
Any other tips on minimizing contamination? I feel like this would be the biggest issue that I would have, especially given that I'm going to be working in a space that has a lot of other plants around it, particularly seedlings, as well as honey bees.
I will be TCing in a large unheated greenhouse, most likely. Here, generally speaking, during the winter time the lowest temperature that the greenhouse gets (I think) is in the 40s at night. During the day it will get to be in the 80s and 90s. Would this be too cold and/or hot for the plantlets? I could bring them to a more temperate space when I am waiting for them to propagate. Or possibly insulate them.
Any advice is greatly appreciated. I will probably have more questions later so stay tuned! :2738:
