I thought Keith used grass as medium and fert.
He does, for the bananas inground. But he containerized the 2 HMs I sent him to kick start them. I'm amazed they got that tall and sprouted that dense root system from a topped corm in a month.
I'm setting up 2 grass cans this year between certain mats to test this technique. IMO it works like being hooked up to an IV bag. Will be getting input from Dr Jonathan Crane from Univ of FL as to why this technique works the way it does.

Look at the size of that thing! Fourty eight days from a topped corm. The spacing between petioles along the pstem shows how fast it is growing. The first bunch should be amazing too!

I see grub holes in the leaf. Look down into the petioles and pick him out with tweezers. There will be lots of grub poop - digested cigar leaf. Then stomp on him 4 or 5 times. I cuss a lot doing this - very satisfying. lol

Nah --- the little grubby buggers are deaf and blind. How they get into a 10 ft high pstem bothers me. Is the adult depositing eggs up there or does he crawl up the trunk on six tiny legs? Both scenarios sound far fetched.

The holes look very evenly spaced. Might not be a grub but something mechanical? Or may be it was growing faster than it was able to unfurl? I would not be overly concerned.

So, where can I find out more about the "grass" system - is there a post somewhere?
I get lots of grass clippings in summer from mowing - usually use for mulch for fruit trees or add to compost pile. Is there a better use for my nanas

I'm skeptical of the grub theory, but suppose it's possible.
Do grubs damage any of the following leaves or is it a one & done grub?
It's the guy in the pic I posted in the Ae Ae attacked thread. This has happened over 2 dozen times in the last 8 years. Take a look before the PK grows bigger or is eaten alive.
Not a one shot deal. He will stay in the area between the last open leaf petiole and the cigar. Drilling straight thru. That's why the holes are lined up when unfurled. The petioles will fill up with grub poop and I found that manual removal or mild insecticide works fine.
Found as many as 3 or 4 grubs in a single pstem over the years. Mostly on the Ae Ae --- mama and pups.

Once on a visit Nick showed me those HM sports. Several were one to two feet tall with a dozen small leaves. Like it was an SDC.
Interesting....
I did notice that one looked different then all the others.
Presently it's under an inch tall, but clearly fatter, thicker, and more rounded than the other pups were at that stage.
Thanks Nick, funny looking sports is a little vague, can you be more descriptive.
Is this pup a sport, a funny looking sport, or a normal HM pup?

I am 100% serious when I say Marshalltown is the Best.
I bought all my Marshalltown tools in the 80's, the first one was "The Hog"
Magnesium Hand Float and I was hooked after that.
I used the 6 X 2 Margin Trowel to removed the HMs and similar pups.
The strength and sharp flat edge gives the control needed in tight spaces.
I can make a precise cut and do very little damage to the main plant.
This is one of the HM pups I removed today, the cut is simply perfect.

30 lb average is great, I think everything I've read is in the low 20's.
Yeah, I wasn't expecting the yields that I get with them. I would consider the low 20s to be low. I generally have 5 useable hands. The lower hands produce very small fruits so I try to cut them off.
I just made some fufu with them, and it wasn't that good. A report on mofongo with them was poor. Apparently they taste pretty good baked. I think that they shine as tostones and chips. I also sold a pile of them for people to eat fresh. They are a good fresh banana, but not my favorite.

It's a problem with ARHs but minor.

Yeah, that stuff was great. It was a mixture of muck, clay and silt. If it got wet it would stick to your tires. The pH was like 6.8 and after a long history of vegetable farming, it was very rich. The soil that I am farming now is a mixture of sand, muck and marl. The pH is around 8.0 and prior to me the land had been in pasture. In the sandier areas I actually have to put out nitrogen.

I am not too good at the price discovery thing. I just come up with a price and sell as much as I can. 50 cents sounded reasonable, and I had a lot of buyers at that price. I used to sell 3 boxes/week to a person that had a produce buyers club. I'd sell her a 40lbs box for $30 and I think there were usually only 48 fingers in a box. She bought a lot of different things for her customers from bananas to snap beans to kale. I think they paid her about $25/week for a box of fresh local produce.
