I'm not worrying about seeds till this crap heads out (2 days).. I think we're up to 30F.. Oh boy..For all the seeds in the ground or in pots I've planted in FL I'm averaging 35% germination or real growth--maybe. Fresh seeds! Fresh seeds in my past gardening life meant I had to thin.

It's been raw here today--about 46 but I swear I saw my breath! Found a pepper forming on one of the plants I dug up from last year's garden (produced nary a bloom then because of cutworms it seems. Cutworms IME chop off a young plant; the cagey FL ones wait until it gets 2' tall then strip it. Lesson learned.)

Sorry it's so cold for you.

Sorry it's so cold for you.

For as cold as its been I have a Cabbage I planted last fall that is determined to succeed cold or no cold.. I need some more of that seed.. :^)

For as cold as its been I have a Cabbage I planted last fall that is determined to succeed cold or no cold.. I need some more of that seed.. :^)Cabbage and other cole crops prefer chilly weather. They will overwinter in Akron, OH which, I believe, is a bit colder than where your plant is located. But, hey, make some sauerkraut!

The big cabbage fields here went through at least two hard freezes without any ill effect.

My little cabbage plants still look pitiful.

Temps down to 50f tonight. I'll take that over freezing temps elsewhere.

03-05-2014, 09:51 AM
You know its a very nice day when you look @ the 10 day forecast and see no freezing temps.. for the most part.. a 32F for tonight in S. Ark is mild.. Of course I ain't saying it can't change in a polecat's meow.. now.. :^)

My little cabbage plants still look pitiful.I am beyond anti chemical fertilizer or was before moving to the "sand bar" but I think you need to feed them. I have veggies thriving in pots but only because I dosed them with generic Miracle Gro 4 times. (This black sand is heavy with little or no nutritional value.) If I ever get settled where I can compost/build dirt, I will toss what's left of this stuff. Or maybe not...

Well I have a pair of 36F's in my N. La forecast Wed & Thursday.. Now if only they are wrong on the low side of things.. 36F & 33F in S. Ark for same time period.. speaking of Time.. :^)

Lovely today, in 70s already and sunny. Still nearly nothing sprouting.

I thought it was SO lovely I went out back and using a can of expanding foam working on a costume piece. Bad idea. I locked the back door and spent almost an hour now trying to remove expanding foam from my skin while it takes over the back porch.

Hoping that it doesn't drop below 40 here, but I think it will on thursday night.

Abnshrek
03-13-2014, 12:27 PM
Well the forecast was wrong.. it got down to 30F.. Hopefully by the official day of Spring everything will be uncovered.. :^)

Abnshrek
03-14-2014, 11:09 AM
Fixin' to uncover a couple Banana's in N La. but the mid 30's coming Sunday & Monday have me holdin' my horses on uncovering all of them.. Especially my Goldfinger, but I might put one out from the Banana room, only cause its to big. It may stay on the porch to protect it from any frost till next weekend.. Then its on.. if no 30's are in the 10 day forecast. :^)

Abnshrek

Just when you think all is well they throw mid 30's in the short-term forecast. This is for Lower Ark.. Possible flurries in March.. Crazy..

Pouring rain for at least 24 hours here. BUT it's not going to get cold during or afterwards as far as the forecast shows. So all the plants I've gotten into the ground should get a real boost.

That's awesome.. after uncovering early last year (feb 23rd) & seeing what happened I find myself lingering on the cautious side this year, especially after such a wicked winter.. Thursday is my day still, but hope all is good going forward.. :^)

It does look like I have lost a few bananas(probably to the second hard freeze that surprised me), but most are poking little heads out of the ground. Even the dwarf red that I wrote off as gone has the tiniest tip sticking up. Frank the tough (grand nain?) is coming back well. Both gros michal are struggling but not bad.

Abnshrek
03-17-2014, 10:37 PM
Up on the N. LA - Lower Ark plain we will have high 30's for low's into next week.. Some uncovering will take place next week like my Goldfinger's and my fruiting Raja Puri.. The Banana room will see some go out to see how it goes this Thursday.. :^)

Good luck. We're finally warming up in Florida but got a hell of a rainstorm yesterday. I thought the wind was going to take out a few of my plants but they hung in there like champs.

Looks like another vortex is coming down next week.. I feel sorry for the folks to the East of me.. Then again it was suppose to be 39F last night, but only got down to 52F.. I'd like some more false cold forecasts.. :^)

I hope the cold doesn't make it down to southwest Louisiana. My forecast doesn't show anything colder than 48. I've taken most of the plants out of the greenhouse and begun my fertilizer routine already. Enough of this lousy weather.

I use Intellicast on line services they seem to get the closest, again a lot closer than the local jokers.

Here weather personalities they do better at food and clothing drives like coats for kids than weather forecasting.

It is a little chilly this morning -- Absolutely love the weatherman from Snookie -
Michael - Please share your startup fertilizer routine - I'm loaded with 0-0-50 and ready to get these puppies jump started. :woohoonaner:
BTW - the Caligold pups are leafiing at about 4 feet. BJ and D namwa are pushing cigars. Stubby Braz and goldfinger are still questionable. Looks like I'll be starting out with little pups on most varieties. Most surprising, D Cavendish are pushing cigars.

Jose ---- save the 0-0-50 for when the pstems near fruiting height. To kick start small plants you need N. Good idea to call a local Ag supplier to find out what is used locally for vegetable beds. Here in S FL med-low-high is the general formula cause of all the naturally occouring P in the soil and low potassium.

That sounds like sound advice if your in warmer parts than I am.. I've had stems fruit @ half the normal height after getting a stem thru winter intact.. I'm not saying I load mine down, but I give them a Tablespoon monthly just in case they are foolish and decide to fruit early.. If its there they can use it if not, they can get it later when they need it.. Of course they get fish on top of Banana Fuel.. :^)

Well another day where the forecast was wrong, but another morning of 32F when I woke up this fine Morning.. I'm sure tomorrow will be worse. The thing is there is this rumor its going to freeze in April.. I'm sure that's what's keeping the Tomato farmer next door from doing much, this maybe not in N. La (which is great). I don't think you'll see no "Banana's Heading North for Spring" Thread any time soon.. :^)

Well, not in the morning or evening but during the day. Only thing so far I hate about central FL is that you have to sprinkle seeds still considering emerging about 3x a day. I whacked back the P-stem on the DC today--probably did it wrong but I did it. Had I not, on the spur of the moment purchased Mother's Day plants for myself which included the DC and a pomegranate (neither are happy), I wouldn't have discovered this forum. I think we're all out of the woods on the S. Ark plain.. If the lowest we'll see is 42F its all good, but for the tenderest of Banana's, and Dragonfruit. I saw this morning my CG is pushing a pup so very good indeed.. The 3 that are not pushing its just a matter of time. :^)

My two CG pup pstems actually survived and are pushing cigars at about 4 ft. :goteam: I lost mama CG that was ready to bloom. ( CG is tougher than I expected- only got a HF blanket wrapping this year - my namwahs and orinoco didn't do that well. But the CG is in a different part of the yard so that may be the difference. Everybody got a good dose of high N fert the other day. I'm still cutting down dead pstems but all are pushing pups. I saved the orinoco for last need to rent a backhoe to tackle that mat.

I am so thankful that I'm finallly where frosts are very rare and well predicted; I feel so sorry for you fighting this nasty winter. I was in Lowes today chatting with a couple from just below Raleigh; she kept repeating "we're in the 40s--the 40s--the 40s--worst winter ever!" Of course this so called Yankee--hello? I grew up in MD which is below the Mason Dixon Line--who suffered 3 winters in Akron wanted to boink her upside the head and say "40 is shorts weather for many idiots" but I didn't.

Sorry for my rambling--I really do feel bad for you. Consolation to you? I left established tomatoes, peppers and such in Jacksonville that were fruiting; I arrived here too late to get anything started this year before ACK summer hits. Someday I'll be in the right place at the right time to grow a decent tomato--maybe.

Well now that the storms are out of this area @ least. I know some people are getting rain, but the major thing is how far is the snow & cold going to push south.. I think I'm good w/ 41F & 43F as a low isn't great by any means.. I'm bringing in my Pineapples just in case they are off..

Hey Y'alls down there(South) did you know that when there is a long slow storm front that moves in a slow northeast direction towards me (Ohio) that it picks up your rich red southern soil and deposits it "up north".
This happens only with the big weather systems.
Here is a pic of the white hood of my truck.
Of course its on everything decks, leaves, windows.
This a lot of soil....

It got down to 42F this fine morning, so much for the Low of 45F.. I heard they are going to have snow in the UP.. I like my rain just fine.. I'll take it as long as it comes down.. Me sinking in the corners of the garden doesn't bother me one bit.. I think real rain water helps seeds better than well water.. :^)

If it's any consolation I have a determined armadillo digging in my garden and Mr. Cocoa is not planning to punt again. Cayenne? A weak spray including ammonia? Stupid animal...

As for rain...I totally agree. When I say the garden has grown noticeably after an overnight rain, most people say I'm nuts. But IMO plants (and probably seeds) know it's coming and prepare; up north Maples will turn their leaves outward when a storm is brewing. (Saved rainwater isn't the same but better than city or well I believe.)

You can catch those dillers using a live trap. Have to use specific bait like what they normally eat - grubs, worms.

I take a 6 inch section of nylon stocking and tie one end. Put in a good pinch of earthworms you can buy at a bait store or even Wal Mart. Knot the open end. Open up a paper clip and hook it thru the bag. Hang it from the top of the trap beyond the paddle trigger. It works. Most other critters will leave the worms alone. Box up the dillers and mail them to Abnshrek for making gumbo.:ha:

I could borrow a little one but the monster who trolls here would get stuck getting into it. Now, if I really thought they'd taste better than cooked avocados, I might send Mr. Cocoa out with the pellet gun to wing it; he has a "knife" (from fishing) that would whack up a befuddled one quickly. Who butchers? Not me. I do whole supermarket chickens well but can't figure out where the grain is on meat so I pass.

I honestly don't think we have grubs here and very few worms except for the cutting ones. What ticks me off is that this guy (he's all male--women are daintier) really didn't dig much but knocked off a green pepper from a red pepper plant, whacked off 3 volunteer tomatoes nearly ripe (not going to be very good but something red), dug up my struggling chard (now in cells with decent dirt to grow a bit more), tossed 2 newly planted tomatoes (I didn't notice right away but they're settled in again; thankfully it's raining!) and, unbelievably, strewn a pepper and 2 special thyme plants (1 German and 1 French which may not survive and I got them confused when relocating because I'm a bad tagger) that were in 4" square pots in a tray.

I think he's jonesing for another "chase and kick fest" with Mr. Cocoa--he just might get his wish! Me? I'll shower the area with cayenne and hope his little nose burns off.

Everybody is whoopin' and hollerin' about how deathly cold and snow-buried this winter will be (thanks Farmer's Almanac). But current scientific predictions for Dec-Jan-Feb in my area are above average temps and average snowfall.
