:( Well hell! Katrina is a Cat. 5 now which means a whole ****load of people are going to get hurt when she lands. It's also a very wide storm and getting bigger. We are on the Eastern side of the projected path and as any hurricane veterans know: "West is Best, East is the Beast!"

Anybody in So. Louisiana or So. Mississippi?

I am getting ready to go out and start attaching the plywood, moving the potted plants into the carport and tying stuff down. What a waste of a great weekend!

Our house is over 50 years old and survived Ivan, Frederic, Opal, Elena, Georges, Alberto and several others that just skirted the area with only minor damage, so we are probably riding it out. Ivan spawned a tornado that came through my back acreage and got to within about 100 feet of the house. It did the most damage this place has ever seen - knocking down more than 100 old-growth trees (75 feet tall), but it only knocked down a few of the bananas that were already here.

Of course I now have 10 times that many bananas growing, some more than 12-15 feet tall, and I am not real encouraged for this one! I am of the opinion that the wind shredding of the leaves is a natural function and will help cut the wind damage on the lee side of the bigger ones. I will not be removing any leaves.

I will update as possible, as I'm sure anyone else in the path will.

Wishing you the best.

It looks like you will get the East side but let's hope you're far enough East that it isn't too bad.

after going through andrew and katrina, i'd take andrew! at least it was fast moving and dry!

katrina was terrifying...why is it big storms always come in during the middle of the night?

best of luck, thoughts and prayers are with you!

Sean,

Katrina was a bare shadow when you met her of what she is to be. The experts are saying she is close to surpassing Camille in intensity and if she hits New Orleans dead on she could eclipse Andrew in $ damage.

Most of my prep work is done, all that's left is screwing the plywood down - that'll get done this evening when it cools down some.

(PS, sorry about your nanners! Thank god they are a persistent plant!)

This storm has the potential to reshape the map permanently. It will carve a completely new landscape.
Over 100,000 people are too poor to leave - no car, no money to travel, no credit cards... It's estimated that 44,000 people may not survive.
New Orleans may be under 35 feet of water in a few hours.
If there were such thing as a Category 6, this would be a 6.

My thoughts and prayers are with all in the path of this hurricane. I've been watching The Weather Channel, and can not even imagine facing this one...

Have a friend in Mobile who said she was staying and was still there yesterday. I sure do hope they made her leave! Also a friend near New Orleans who left day before yesterday(I think). Said they might drive to their property in Tenn. Maybe they should drive further. :( .
