My poor basjoo has been struggling since the heat wave started back in June. Its barely clinging on to life. I think the new leaf is taking its time because it doesn't want to experience the heat. My basjoo is shaded from most of the hot afternoon sun and even with plenty of water, its getting scorched. I cant believe its the same beautiful plant back in May. I hope it can still recover but the temps are going to be above 100 this week and into next week with no rain in sight.

Wow, Nasty looking. I pray for all Texans for cooler temps and oodles of rain. Good luck, I hope your plants make it through.

Thanks Ray. I'm hoping for some cooler weather too. It broke my heart to see it scorched. Luckily the pstem looks fine so maybe it will recover once it cools down

I'm having much the same problem with my Musa mannii. No matter how much water I give it, it looks sad. I have fertilized it recently and even tried deep watering it all to no avail. When I first planted it several years back it did great, even bloomed a couple of times for me but it has struggled since.

I'm glad mine isn't an isolated case. I just hate seeing it look like that, because I was expecting alot of growth. I think its looking forward to fall and so am I lol. Are Basjoo bananas more of temperate climate plant?

Sunshade fabric is cheap... maybe hit up one of your local custom manufacturers for a couple square years of the fabric, heck, even scrap fabric would work for a banana plant.

We have a mister set up out here (can be run during frost too) but so far the temps haven't been much over 105°.

Since the big shade trees got cut down last year I leave the "winter greenhouse" frame set up but with a 5' strip of scrap shade fabric across the top instead of the clear plastic.

My temps have been in the 100*'s. We have had extreme heat for 18 days I water everyday. My bananas are doing fine but they set by ponds maybe the humidity is why.

Cameron,

I am so sorry to see your plants looking so ragged from the heat. I certainly sympathise. I hate watering in the dry weather.

I had no joy either from my Acers this year as too much sun left them with every leaf burnt. I decided to top cover with winter fleece and the red leaf is coming back.

Thank God our summer has'nt been as hot as yours. I hope your part of the world is soon as dull as dishwater (cloudy) with a monsoon type rainfall.

The shade cloth is a good idea. I may have to try that next year. Thank you so much Orinoko, my Japanese maple is burning up like it does every year. Its in full shade too. Vickie your garden is beautiful! Hopefully my basjoo will spring back too life when the weather cools down.

He who hesitates is lost.
Put a mist spray on the plant to lower the temps under the sun screen. If you can find one of those that are used for people outside it will do the trick. I got a mist sprayer about 8 foot long at
walmart and it really puts out a nice fine mist and the temps drop sometimes as much as 30 degrees. You should realize that also since you are so dry. Good luck with the plant and the rain.

Thank you Noah. That's a great idea and I didn't know the misters would drop the temps like that. I guess i need to check out walmart. I looked today and the pstem is turning yellow.

There is a misting hose visible way up at the top of the pic; works great for not only HOT & DRY but also makes a good "anti-freeze device".
Mine is hooked to a thermostat & solenoid for automatic operation.
(ignore the red oval, pic was for another post)

Wow I've never seen anything like that. I'll probably invest in one next year, if I grow bananas again. I can't seem to keep them alive.

I seem to struggle with basjoo in particular as well when it's small, don't feel bad. I have grown up some very nice sikkis but my basjoos really seem to have short lifespans when small. I have killed maybe 3 different plants now and have 1 that is a slow grower. I wonder if there is something in particular hanging up?

I guess I will just avoid basjoo altogether lol. Mine was even slow growing in the spring.

I also live in Plano Texas and right now I have three big market umbrellas trying to give some shades to my plants. (It seems to help quite well!)
Should have thought about that weeks back but it didn't come to me until ten days ago that market umbrellas could shade the plants quite well.
Problem is the big ones that are too tall for the umbrellas are struggling.

I noticed that depending on the soil they can take the heat more or less well.
The only Basjoo that is really doing well is on the north side of the house. Not the best place normally for a banana but with this summer it is the best.
I also think that they struggle to get all the water up into the plant in the extreme heat. Some of my IceCreams looks more rotten than not so I get the feeling it struggles to get the water up from the soil. The other thing I noticed is that some of the stems in full sunlight get so hot they turn brown and start to rot.
Truly a horrible summer in Texas this year.
Last year when my wife came back from her parents she was wowed by the jungle I had in the back. This year they are struggling to keep a live. So sad...

Yes this summer has been very horrible. I ended up losing the last 2 of my bananas. I guess I'm just going to stay away from them for the time being lol.

I guess the heat has been really bad in most places. I was hoping to get a little rain yesterday but it was another dry day. I've given up on watering most of my plants

I guess it's a good thing that we have humidity here, but who knows... Irene might just destroy my plants too Willow ha ha. :ha:

I hope Irene misses you. Do you have any evacuation plan? I wish she would bring some rain this way

ArchAngeL01

No evacuation plan but I believe it's suppose to just clip the edge of N.C north of me. Please don't give up on bananas!

Have you tried growing some of the more tropical species who are use to the heat? Saba might do good for you since it's from the Philippines.
Maybe raja puri since it's from India?

Willow87
08-26-2011, 11:18 AM
I would love to grow Saba, but I'll have to wait until next year. I don't have the money for anymore plants now. I'm getting some plumeria seeds from a friend and thats the last plant I'm getting this year
