Hi all,

Just wanted to introduce myself. I'm new banana plants and put my first one in the ground in April. I now have 10 of them in my small yard in Ventura. They seem to be doing well -- constantly putting out new leaves. I'm hoping that by next year they'll be putting out flowers. I've stuck primarily to dwarf varieties because my yard is small and we get high winds here during the Santa Ana season (fall - winter) which I figured would shred the taller varieties.

I've already gleaned all sorts of useful information from the website and I look forward to getting to know you all better.

Cheers,
Mark

Hi Mark, and a big welcome from the beautiful state of Maryland. When you get a chance, tell us what varieties you're growing. And put some pics of your babies in your gallery!

Here are the varieties I am currently growing:

dwarf Namwah
dwarf Orinoco
dwarf Jamaican red
dwarf Cavendish
dwarf Brazilian
Goldfinger
Misi Luki
Rajapuri
one unknown, possibly another Rajapuri

I'll post pictures of my little babies at some point.

Anyone have other favorites among the shorter varieties? Varieties with p-stem heights less than 8' or so?

Thanks for welcoming me to the forum.

Mark

Double Mahoi

Thanks Tony. I was aware that the double mahoi is a short plant, but how is its flavor? I was under the impression that it is of the cavendish family and so might not be as exciting in flavor as fruits from say the namwah group.

I prefer store bought bananas to the Namwah. Namwah is to sweet or my taste.
