I'm in Warrenton, VA and also have some plants in Hague, VA about 100 miles southeast. I got started about 10 years ago when someone gave me a couple of banana plants they did not have room to store for the winter. I have since had to give away many for the same reason. In this area I have to dig up everything and bring it in for the winter and many of them are just too big (over 10 feet). They do fine in pots with almost no water for the winter! I have had fruit several years but always too late to finish. I'm excited this year as one of mine started a bloom as soon as i put it out this spring! It only set 3 hands but I hope they will finish...cannot wait to taste one of them.
I have no idea what variety they are or much about how to grow them other than what I learned from trial and error!

Thanks Sunfish! I was told it was brought east from CA. How do you know it is Orinoco? I'm not questioning the answer, just trying to learn a little!

Welcome to the site! I hope you enjoy it here. Remember, bananas are pretty vigorous organisms. If they are too tall for you to bring indoors (and you can't overwinter them) there is no need to give them away or let them die (well, unless you're just awesome and love giving them away, that's cool then :) ) You can cut the stem off at any level and new leaves will continue to grow from there. This is never an issue unless the plant is just about to bloom and you happen to cut the blossom off within the stem. Other than that, you can chop them to anywhere (even at ground level) and pot them/bring them in. Even if, by chance, the transplant and the chop is hard on it and the main plant dies, pups will come up from the corm to replace it. Enjoy the site!

Welcome to the site! Somebody here will definitely know how long it takes for bananas to ripen. They seem to know everything about banana plants! Good luck!
