Normally they ripen on the plant, when they are ripe the skin splits and the fruits peel themselves. If they didn't do that, then there could have been an environmental issue that prevented them from developing properly, but I would not say it is necessarily the fact they are in a pot as I have had them fruit fine in containers before, perhaps it was a stunted plant or was not fed enough?
