Default *@% am i wasting my time? no root

I am new at this. I have had some ornicos(don't know how you spell it) for about 5 years, they have fruited three times, I divide them up and around the yard, and have added:
an ornamental??
Zebrina
Basjoo
Siam Ruby
Dwarf Cav.

now I'm trying to thin out the huge mass of the original Ornicos, and want to start some pots of them, and pass some to friends. IF I DIG IT UP AND DON'T GET ANY ROOT, IS THERE HOPE for the banana? Do I throw them into the compost pile, or give them some TLC?
