I'd say the squirrels, which are not exclusively nut-eaters, are looking at fresh banana shoots as "oh yum, fresh salad!"

I've used a motion-activated sprinkler to reasonable success against tree rats, so I'd assume it would have a similar benefits with squirrels. The most effective thing I've found thus far, however, remains my trusty slingshot and pea gravel.
