Default Killed my Basjoo

Hi all, been lurking for a while and thought I would pick your collective brains. I planted out 2 Basjoos last Spring. They did really well until the first snow we had. At that time they basically died down to the ground. I cut them off at ground level and covered them with their own leaves for some insulation. I monitored the soil temps all Winter and it really reached 32*F and our low was about 15*F. So far they have not come back and from what I have been able to figure out the problem might have been that it was too wet. I purchased some replacements and I would like to be able to overwinter these guys safely. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am located in North-eastern, NJ. According to the Arbor Day Foundation, I am in zone 7.

Thanks in advance,

Jeff
