These are very tropical plants. Pushing the envelope, are we..? Traveler's Trees, anyone..? (Yes,...I would "kill" to grow one..and would certainly KILL it). Not only do Bird of Paradise absolutely HATE cold, but they would hope for cloying humidity as well.
