Early this year (2024) I bought a couple of Musa Velutina plugs through an online seller I know from a Facebook bananas group. They had proper colour printed factory labels and the seller has a great reputation for being 100% thorough and professional.

However, the plants have darker leaves, glossy, strong and coloured exactly like Red Bengal. They are utterly exquisite.

At this point I should mention that I spent quite a while trying to start a Bananas photo album as instructed, but the machinery did not like the format (iPhone photos) and rejected it. If it would not let me open an album using iPhone Photos then something must be temporarily on the blink.


Anyway, my question is, has anyone else in the UK this year had exactly the same plant label mix-up happen - a Velutina turning into Red Bengal? I'm thinking maybe somebody in a tissue culture lab inadvertently mislabeled a batch of plants, leading to quite a bit of confusion amongst buyers.

The happy upshot is I couldn't imagine enjoying a Velutina the way I'm enjoying these superbly-marked bananas, so am delighted. I just wanted to see if this had been a widespread occurrence.
