What grain size do you recommend?
pool filter sand/silica sand; there have been people here that have used it, but i tried it and found it stays to wet.

what you want is an aggregate that is about half the size of your little fingernail. what you might try is aquarium gravel. but do not use the smooth surface gravel [looks like river rock], that stays to wet. use the rough irregular aquarium gravel that looks somewhat similar to what he is using.

also you will have better results with a 2 1/2 gallon pot versus a small pot.
