I am also not an expert but I try to balance time left in season and size of pup. If it's close to end of season I usually leave them until next year so the mother plant has plenty of time to recover. I've seen some mention about 8 weeks of recovery time so I use that as a general rule. Since they grow most vigorously when they are outside during peak temps. In my area I usually bring my pots in around the end of October so end of August is my cut off time. As far as size I've removed several that size myself from my potted bananas but the longer you can wait the better in my opinion.
