Canada Invaded Texas ... will my bananas survive?
This was my first winter of having bananas and then we had the historic artic blast. We were lucky and only lost power for a few hours and kept running water just a trickle of pressure and then boiling it.
But the yard.... I had the bananas deeply mulched and insulated up to about 2' just for normal wintering. When the weather forecast looked so bad, I wrapped christmas lights around them, added thick moving blankets around them and tarps and plastic to keep the snow and ice off.
Now that we are back to normal weather, I removed the extra stuff and can reach down into the mulch and some of the bigger stalks feel pretty firm to the touch.
My question - at what point should I remove all the wintering mulch and cut them back to the firm part to see if they will come back?
Thanks. It's been a rough few weeks and if I lose some landscaping, I am soooo much luckier than many.
