Usually the white substance is a build up of excess salts (from fertilizer) or hard water that appears around the edges and drain holes and the top of your soilless mix.
The mite situation and soil discoloration are probably not related.

My pots do this and I just till the soil over with a fork.

A fast internet search can fill you in with better detail of the possible situation.
