Hahaha, I had the same thing last night with frogs and lizards hiding in them... I just started at the middle of the p-stem and pull with my nails from the edges until I can get a grasp of the dead tissue and pull it down from there and when I got to the rhizome it came right off by slightly tugging diagonally. Some flakes would stay on the p-stem, I just used the palm of my hand and rubbed them off with an up and down motion.
