Having thought about it, I'm thinking there might be 2 different views of "cold hardy." If a person expects the banana plant to stand year round with green leaves 12 months, then even a basjoo like I have is not cold hardy in my zone. For my purposes, I would use your definition that the plant can be left in the ground and expected to come back up in the spring.
The only banana plants I've tried are the basjoo, which I've had for several years and a "Mekong Giant" which did not survive one winter.
