Default Re: Anyone growing bananas in North Texas

I'm having a lot of trouble googling anything very definite, and also area specific about growing bananas.

I know there are several people in the DFW area do grow bananas. I want a 5-min crash course from someone who knows their stuff! haha.
I want to grow something edible, that will survive the winter even if I have to love on it alot and protect it well, and not a variety found in stores.
But, I have no idea when to buy a plant, when to put in the ground, etc etc.

Will take recommendations for edible varieties in Zone 8a (Fort Worth TX)
