Pushing the season
Last Friday, April 17, I decided to remove all protection from my outdoor basjoos. There
was (and still is) nothing close to frost in sight for the next 2 weeks, and they were
outgrowing their protection anyway. By that time it will be May and any danger of freezing
temperatures minimal and if, then only light and brief. The PS will be unaffected by such
modestly low temperatures and as the leaves are concerned, they will build up more before
then than such a mild frost will be able to set back.
Likewise yesterday, April 18, I have planted a few tomatoes. Because of their thinner leaves
they are more vulnerable than bananas, but also more easily protected should cold
temperatures be forecast. It is recommended here, that tomatoes not be planted before mid
May, but considering the exceptionally warm winter and spring we had here and the fact that
we are about 3 weeks ahead of normal, I thought, I’d take a chance. Worst case scenario I
lose a few dollars and have to replant them again. Otherwise I will have tomatoes 3 weeks
sooner than usual.
