Default Re: A tour of my winter yard

Anna, you better get them ready cause they said it's going to get cold at night later this week. This is really like desert weather, hot during the day and cold at night! I have been taking all the leaves that turn yellow or brown and cutting them into small pieces along with all my other yard trimmings except the grass and pilling it up around the bases of the Bananas to keep the warmth in the soil at night. I only water in the morning so it can dry out and warm up by the evening. My thought is that enough of the ground will stay warm and radiate heat upwards to the leaves. For my Pineapples and my Mango I used about 3 inches of crushed black Lava rock. Same thing here, I water in the morning and it collects heat all day then stays warm at night. I have checked the soil with my fingers in the morning and it seems to be working well!

I hear ya on that stuff on the inside of window, especially if you drive on the freeway a lot and use the polluted outside air. My truck doesn't have a heppa filter system so I get whatever air is around me!
