Listen to Jeff and Justin. They are almost as wise as your mom.

You might get away with planting and wintering it outside with good protection, in a
cinch, but if you have a spot near a window indoors, that would be the better approach.
As an added benefit it will continue to grow, although at a slower rate, and when
the time comes to plant tomatoes in your area, move a plant, which has grown over
winter, instead of regressed outside.

It is not going to overwhelm your living room with the limited available light.
