I have a copy of the recipe that George Washington used to make "beer" for his consumption. . . A quick perusal of the ingredients makes me think it was closer to the ferment later distilled to make Rum than actual beer. There is a heckovalot of molasses in there and not a lot of barley or hops.
Still, as mankind has shown again and again, it doesn't matter where you get your sugars so long as the yeast will eat it and make you some alcohol.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go check the gravity readings on my mead in the basement. . .
