Best soil is cheap bagged top soil as they grow best in sandy soil don't put too much organic matter .... and nematodes are the main problem, at least here in FL Ideally they are 18 month plants in a tropical setting ... basically high nitrogen fert first 9 months and a balanced fert after that . The cooler weather is what tells them to bloom if the plants are big enough.
